2008-08-01 Welcome back - Viva El Birdos

I thought bobby cox did carpenter a huge favor by ordering bunts with nobody out in both of the first two innings. he actually flashed the sign 3 times in the first 8 batters ---- escobar in the 1st inning, johnson and miller in the 2d --- and while one of the bunts went for a base hit, on the whole i think they helped carpenter immensely, put easy outs on the board when the pitcher was laboring and gave him a chance to collect himself. the 1st-inning sacrifice came before carp had fully reacquainted himself with the strike zone; he missed badly on 5 of his first 6 pitches. the bunt itself came on a pitch nowhere near the strike zone --- should have been ball 2 to escobar. the corky miller bunt in the 2nd inning came after three consecutive singles (one of them on johnson and rsquo;s bunt). at that early point in the game carpenter had

2008-07-22 What if Its All Been a Big Fat Lie - New York Times

Thirty years later, America has become weirdly polarized on the subject of weight. On the one hand, weve been told with almost religious certainty by everyone from the surgeon general on down, and we have come to believe with almost religious certainty, that obesity is caused by the excessive consumption of fat, and that if we eat less fat we will lose weight and live longer. On the other, we have the ever-resilient message of Atkins and decades worth of best-selling diet books, including The Zone, Sugar Busters and Protein Power to name a few. All push some variation of what scientists would call the alternative hypothesis: its not the fat that makes us fat, but the carbohydrates, and if we eat less carbohydrates we will lose weight and live longer.

2008-05-09 Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents Sutra - Danza Ballet

Szymon Brz and oacute;ska and rsquo;s original compositions and ndash; written for a string trio, piano and percussion and ndash; are the adhesive that hold together these different components and generate the mood, the feeling, that vital emotional link between the audience and the performers, between us all. While this music does not emulate traditional Chinese styles, Szymon draws inspiration heavily from the ambience of the temple and its environs and ndash; the landscape, the sounds in the air, the mood prevailing in the monastery and conversations with Master Yen Da and ndash; to provide us with a score that reflects the underlying emotions in the choreography. The fact that the monks in Sutra are not and ldquo;performers and rdquo; in the strict sense of the term is part of the challenge for the composer: his attempt is to take the beauty and the grace

2008-10-08 Procedure Guideline for Myocardial Perfusion Imaging 3. 3* - Health - redOrbit

Approaches to data processing and study quality control are described in the guideline on SPECT (see SNM Procedure Guideline for General Imaging). After reconstruction, the myocardial perfusion images can be analyzed for the relative activity in each segment of myocardium and compared with a normal database. Before the data are quantified, the images should be reviewed for artifacts due to attenuation or zones of unexpected increased activity. In the absence of artifacts, the zones of myocardium for quantification are selected, the myocardial borders are defined, and the programs then calculate and display the relative distribution of activity. As with other forms of quantitation, these data are useful to supplement the interpretation of an experienced observer.

2008-07-31 Food and wine Keys to living healthier, longer lives Seattle Times Newspaper

Many Americans exercise too hard. The life expectancy of our species, for 99. 9 percent of human history, was about 30 years. The fact that medicine has pushed life expectancy to age 78 doesnt mean our bodies were designed for three-quarters of a century of pounding. Muscles tear, joints wear out, backs go out. The worlds longest-lived people tend to do regular, low-intensity physical activity. The key is to do something light every day. Our Blue Zone research, as well as other well-documented studies, shows that exercise programs fail as often as diets do a huge percentage of the time. Part of the Blue Zones message is to create an environment that supports healthier behaviors so that the benefits that come from diet and exercise naturally occur.

2008-05-28 Stress-Corrosion Cracking in Aluminum Beverage Can Ends-Issues, Observations, and Potential Solutions - Business - redOrbit

In the United States, on average some 375 aluminum cans are used annually per person. 3 The two-piece can is fabricated from two alloys, 3004 (Al-Mn alloy) for the walls and 5182-H38 (Al-Mg alloy) for the end lid. Recent trends have continued to downgauge the cylinder wall thickness, reduce the diameter, and modify the design of the lid. Also, the lid end design has been mechanically strengthened and the yield strength of the end alloy has been increased to 380 MPa. Finally, the level of carbonation and the internal pressure in the can has been increased, This increase of can pressure facilitates stacking and transportation of filled cans. All these changes have resulted in the use of less aluminum and a lower-cost package, but have also led to the characterization that the beverage can is an engineered "pressure vessel. "4

2008-02-23 Center for Biological Diversity: Environmental and Indigenous Groups Meet UN Delegation in Panama

Following the meeting with ANAM, the environmental and indigenous groups organized a widely attended public forum to further inform Panamanians about the World Heritage Centre/IUCN visit and about the threats to their natural heritage. The entire World Heritage Centre/IUCN delegation also attended the forum. Presenters emphasized the importance of La Amistad, both for biodiversity conservation and for indigenous Naso and Ngobe communities who have lived for generations in La Amistads buffer zone. Two parataxonomists from the Naso community explained their studies on aquatic species of the area, and the devastating impact the dams would have on the fish and the communities who depend on them. These dams will completely block the river passage of migratory fish, many of which are important not only ecologically, but for our diet as

Is America Prepared

At some point, were going to have to deal with hordes of zombies. The living dead are a major problem. Theyre destructive and hungry, preferring a diet of human flesh or brains. They are also virtually unstoppable despite the fact that they move at the same pace as a group of senior citizens with bad hips. The positive is that little intervention is required from the government at the beginning. Our military will be useless to counterattack because zombies are very skilled at overrunning bases also. Those who havent been bitten (the most popular method of zombie attack) will eventually form groups and barricade themselves in a house or mall. Barricades are only a temporary measure. The zombies will overcome those moments before the groups begin their daring escape plan. When the people do get away, they will need a place to go.

2008-08-08 Red Band Rant: Hollywood Needs To Go Full Retard

At the end of the day, you either laugh or you cry. Jesus dying on the cross is either a horrific cautionary drama about a perfect human being who was destroyed by an unjust world or a hilarious farce about a sandal-clad pathological liar who gallivanted about making wild, completely ridiculous statements about the true identity of his father. World War II on the home front is either a withering melodrama about an entire generation of women sobbing for their endangered husbands every night or an uproariously funny comedy about a group of devoted wives who stepped out of their comfort zone in order to man the factories and keep things afloat while trying to still feed their children a steady diet of red meat and butter. It all depends on viewpoint.

2008-01-15 The Blue Zone - Lessons for Living Longer from the People Whove Lived the Longest

Working with the worlds top longevity experts, Buettner describes the origin and nature of the unique lifestyle habits of the larger community in each Blue Zone, such as drinking a glass or two of red wine daily, growing a medicinal garden of mugwort, ginger and turmeric, and drinking unusually hard water. He then distills these myriad lifestyle elements into nine common lessons that are the underpinnings of daily life and ritual in each of the Blue Zones -- what he calls the "Power 9"-- that positively impact lifespan. Examples include moving naturally (being active without having to think about it), cutting calories by 20 percent, eating a more plant-based diet, participating in a spiritual community and finding your "ikigai" or "plan de vida" -- your purpose in life.
