Why have I stopped receiving my WeightWatchers.com e-mail newsletter

If you are not receiving our e-mail newsletter after you have subscribed, it is possible that either your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is viewing it as spam or you are using an anti-spam software program that blocks unwanted e-mails. Recently, many ISPs have implemented Spam protection to keep your e-mail inbox from filling up with junk.

ANTI-SPAM Software Programs
ChoiceMail
Junk Spy
MailWasher
Matador
Norton Internet Security
Spam Assassin Pro
Spam Catcher
Spam Butcher
Spam Killer
SpamNet
Mac OS Mail

ISPs look in the To field of inbound e-mails for many addresses. When the Spam Protector detects many addresses in the To field, it places the mail into a Bulk (or Junk) Mail Folder rather than your Inbox. We are working with many ISPs to keep this from happening. In the meantime, you may wish to check your Bulk Mail folder or speak with your ISP. If you are using anti-spam software, please make sure that your settings allow our e-mail to get through.

To ensure you receive our newsletter, please add
weightwatchers@info.weightwatchers.com to your address book.

In addition, please be aware that every article found in the newsletter is on the site.

To double check that your e-mail address is in our database please go to our Control Center, enter your e-mail address and click Submit. If you have a username and password, you will be asked to log in. If you are in the database, you will be sent directly to the e-mail control center.

How do I choose a food plan

TurnAround gives you two plans to make it easier than ever to fit weight loss into your life. Choose the plan you feel will help you make the positive changes required to lose weight and keep it off.

With the Flex Plan, enjoy a wide variety of foods while controlling your eating with the POINTS system. With the Core Plan, control your eating without counting by focusing on wholesome foods from all the food groups. Both approaches are nutritious, satisfying, and easy to learn.

Once you have selected a food plan, your Resources section will include your User Guide for that plan, where you will learn more about how you will lose weight with the plan you have selected. You will also have the opportunity to switch between plans to decide which will better suit your lifestyle. Keep in mind that neither plan is necessarily better than the other. Only your personal preferences and your needs should factor into your decision. Moreover, your gut reaction to a food plan is probably the best indicator you can have.

Why cant I enter my weight this week

The Weight Tracker only allows you to enter one weight each week. When you translate this to the computer, the rule becomes slightly more rigid -- you can only log one weight for each Monday through Sunday period (this includes your start weight and date).

So lets say your start date was a Monday, but you decide you would like to enter your weight on Saturdays. You change your weight-tracking day to Saturday and when Saturday comes you cant enter your weight. The reason for this is that you are still in your current weigh-in week and you have already logged your weight. In order to keep your Saturday weight-tracking day, you would have to wait until the following Saturday to enter your second weeks weight. Now you are on track for Saturday. This will hold true even if you decide to change your weight-tracking day four weeks into the program.

The Weight Tracker will always allow you to enter a weight on every day that has passed of the current week, no matter what day you have set as your weight-tracking day. If you enter a weight on a Monday and this is not your weight-tracking day, you will not be able to enter your weight on your real weigh-in day.

If this happens, go to View and Edit Weight in the Weight Tracker. (Please note.If you have any other browser windows open, you will need to close them and have only your account open in one browser). There you will be able to see the dates you have entered. You will need to change all Monday weights to your scheduled weight-tracking day.

To change a weights date, click on the date and select a new date at the bottom of the box. You may need to do this for more than one weight-tracking day.

To re-enter previous weights click on the link that says Enter Previous Weights and click on a day that is your scheduled weight-tracking day. (If you would like to record a date for an earlier month or year, select from the menu). Enter your weight for the selected day and click Add to list. When you are finished adding weights click Save Weights.

Remember to add only one weight per Monday through Sunday period. For Weight Watchers eTools subscribers, select where you stepped on the scale -- either in a Meeting or at an alternate location.

How do I set a weight goal

After you log in, please click on the My Profile link located at the top right corner of most pages on the Web site. You will be asked to log in again for security purposes.

Once you have accessed the profile page, please click the Weight Tracking details link in the My Plan box. This is where you can set or change your weight goal. After you update your information click the Submit button. You will be asked to confirm your weight tracking details. If the information is correct, click the Save button. If you do not click the Save button the account will default back to the original weight goal.

If you are on the Maintenance Plan, you will not be able to adjust your weight goal. If you wish to revise your weight goal, you will need to use the Edit feature in the Weight Tracker to delete all weights entered since the one that placed you on maintenance. Once you are no longer on maintenance, you will be able to revise your weight goal. Afterwards you can re-enter the deleted weights into the Weight Tracker.

What if I dont see a food on the Core Food List

If you decide to follow the Core Plan, youll get a complete Core Food List, as well as meal and recipe ideas using Core Foods. These tools are outlined in the Core Plan User Guide, available only to subscribers.

If a food is not on the Core Food List, then it isnt a Core Food. That doesnt mean you cant eat it, however. You can eat any food you like including bread, chocolate and alcohol, which arent on the Core Food List, by using your weekly POINTS Allowance. the POINTS Pad will help you keep track of it.

The Core Plan gives you a weekly POINTS Allowance of 35 for foods that are not on the Core Food List. Each week you will be able to reset your weekly POINTS Allowance to 35.

Why dont you provide the POINTS Tracker when I follow the Core Plan

If youre following the Core Plan, choosing from the Core Food List means you dont have to count POINTS values. When WeightWatchers.com was building the features for the Core Plan, we talked with people who were interested in following it (and who were not currently following another plan). The majority of people we talked with indicated they would not want a complicated tool to track POINTS values, nor did they want to have to look up or write down the foods they had spent their weekly POINTS Allowance on.

Based on this information, we designed the POINTS Pad to be a quick and easy way to keep track of the number of POINTS values used and earned, and that is why it does not have the same functionality as the POINTS Tracker.

How do I use Activity POINTS

Flex Plan Users. If you exceed your POINTS Target, we will automatically calculate the number of Activity POINTS values swapped for food POINTS values, and then the weekly POINTS Allowance spent, when you click Save Your Items in the POINTS Tracker. Weekly POINTS are only spent when you have exceeded your POINTS Target and do not have enough Acitivity POINTS values to swap for Food POINTS values.

Activity POINTS values earned through exercise can be swapped for Food POINTS values when youre over your POINTS Target only on that day. When you click Save Your Items in the POINTS Tracker, we will swap as many Activity POINTS values as needed for Food POINTS values. If you do not eat over your POINTS Target on days you exercise, the Activity POINTS values will help boost your weight loss. You cannot swap more Activity POINTS values than are necessary. Plan your exercise and food for the day to see how many Activity POINTS values are available to swap for Food POINTS values.

Activity POINTS values cannot be saved for future days but must be used the day they are earned. If you have a weekly number of Activity POINTS values you are aiming to earn each week, you can see the Weekly Tally after clicking Save Your Items. Weekly Activity POINTS will reset to zero on your weight tracking day.

If you have not earned any Activity POINTS values for the day but have exceeded or plan to exceed your POINTS Target, you can use any of your Weekly POINTS Allowance remaining.

Core Plan Users. In your POINTS Pad, enter the number of Activity POINTS values you earn through exercise. We will automatically calculate how these Activity POINTS values affect your weekly POINTS Allowance.

What if my activities are not listed in the POINTS Tracker

Exercise is a great way to increase your POINTS balance available to you for a particular day. If youre unable to find an activity youve done in your POINTS Tracker database, the activity POINTS Calculator helps you determine POINTS values by entering your weight, and the duration and intensity level of the activity.

After you have accessed the POINTS Tracker, click the add exercise tab. Then click the POINTS Calculator link. A pop-up box will appear. Enter the exercise information into the appropriate boxes and click the Calculate button. After you have calculated the POINTS value close the pop-up box. Then enter the name of the exercise and the POINTS value into the boxes provided and click the add button.

What are the different types of Weight Watchers Meetings
Weight Watchers tries to provide its Meetings members with a welcoming, all-inclusive atmosphere. Therefore, we dont generally divide Meetings groups by gender, age, or weight range.

Traditional Meetings. This is the original format offered in locations throughout the world. Traditional Meetings can best be described as a pay-as-you-go payment plan. Attend Meetings for as long as you like, paying a registration fee at your first Meeting and a weekly fee for every Meeting you attend after that. From time to time special pricing plans are offered to reinforce your commitment to your goals.

The At Work Program. This format closely follows the traditional style except that its design is to fit into the workday schedule. Meetings are prepaid for a set series of weeks, usually twelve. Topics unique to the workplace are discussed at the Meetings and fit into before work, lunchtime or after work schedules. Minimums for starting a series apply. check the local area for further information.

Express Meetings. These speedy Meetings are designed for our Meetings members on the go. Usually lasting no more than half an hour, these Meetings fit into your busy schedule, yet still provide you with the encouragement and support you need.

Weight Watchers and the American Cancer Society (ACS) are concerned about your health. Thats why on March 2, these two organizations are conducting the third annual Great American Weigh In, during which you can walk into any participating Weight Watchers center to learn your Body Mass Index (BMI) for free.

BMI is an assessment commonly used to judge whether your weight is healthy. It is as important to your health as your blood pressure. When you visit Weight Watchers, well teach you about living a healthier lifestyle and how to safely lower your BMI if its too high. Then, if you wish, you can stay for a meeting to see what Weight Watchers is all about.

Consider your trip to Weight Watchers a free first step toward living a longer, healthier life. Dont you think you deserve it And dont you want to learn about the relationship between your BMI, your lifestyle, and your risk for cancer Read on for some basics.

What You Need to Know
Being overweight may put you at a greater risk not only for cancer, but also for heart disease, hypertension, type-2 diabetes, osteoarthritis and stroke. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, one third of all cancer deaths that occur each year in the United States can be prevented through healthy eating and a physically active lifestyle. Think you might need to make some changes Why not get started now

First things first. Achieve and maintain a healthy BMI. Your BMI is a number derived from your height and weight. it can help you determine whether your weight falls within a healthy range for your height. In general, the higher your weight, the higher your BMI and the higher your risk for chronic diseases like cancer.

We know that an elevated BMI is linked with an increased risk of several diseases, including several forms of cancer, says Karen Miller-Kovach, MS, RD, Weight Watchers Internationals chief scientist. But we also know that many of the behaviors that are associated with good eating practices and weight management also appear to be positive in terms of cancer risk.

New Study Looks at Weight Watchers
By Karen Miller-Kovach 7/18/2005

printable page

e-mail to a friend

At Weight Watchers, we continuously review scientific studies and support research in an effort to improve our approach and help people be even more successful in achieving their weight-loss goals. The results of one study were recently made available.

The study was a 12-week clinical trial using the POINTS Food System. The results were presented as part of the European Congress on Obesity in early June. The Weight Watchers-supported research was done by Dr. France Bellisle, DSC, Diabetes Department, Hotel-Dieu Hospital, France.

What Was Done

All of the studys participants were enrolled in Weight Watchers Meetings in Paris, France. One group of 30 overweight women was instructed to follow the POINTS Food System. Another group of 35 women also followed the POINTS Food System, but were given additional information about low-glycemic-index (GI) foods and told to eat at least one low-GI food with each meal. (Read more about Glycemic Index and Weight Loss.)

All of the women participating in the study had their weights taken and a variety of tests, including blood tests, body composition, food journals and appetite/hunger scores, were performed throughout the 12-week trial.

The Results

After 12 weeks, both groups lost a significant amount of weight (about 5pct. of their initial weight). Both groups also had significant improvements in many health-related measures, including lower insulin and cholesterol levels, decreased blood pressure and reduced body fat.1 There was no difference between the two groups for weight loss or for any of the health parameters that were evaluated, indicating that the emphasis on low-GI foods had no effect on these measures. However, the group that had the focus on low-GI foods did report decreased feelings of hunger and increased satiety.2

What It Means

This study supports other research showing that the Weight Watchers approach produces medically significant improvements in weight and several health parameters over 12 weeks.3 The study also suggests that including low-GI foods, while not affecting weight loss or health improvements, may be a useful strategy for those who are dealing with hunger issues as they work to lose weight.

Presidents Message for WeightWatchers.com

Be a role model. Walk the walk, and skip the talk

Weve all read in the press that obesity is not confined to adults only, and Weight Watchers is as concerned as anyone about these trends. In fact, were actively involved in the research to find effective solutions to the problem of childhood obesity. As the mother of three grown girls, I know full well that how you tackle an issue with your children is as important as choosing the right issues to tackle. Thats why Im not surprised by the advice Weight Watchers Chief Scientist, Karen Miller-Kovach, offers on the critical question. What can we do about childhood obesity Her answer. Be a role model. Walk the walk, and skip the talk.

Approach
By The Weight Watchers Research Dept. 1/1/2005

printable page

e-mail to a friend

Weight Watchers is committed to providing a comprehensive approach to weight loss that is based on the latest scientific thinking. All too often in weight loss, a program or product is developed and then individual studies that support the program are provided to justify its existence. The Weight Watchers approach comes out of the science, not the other way around.

There are four principles from which Weight Watchers will not waiver.

Healthy Weight Loss
First, any approach developed by Weight Watchers must provide healthy weight loss, which means.

Produce a rate of weight loss of up to two pounds per week (after the first 3 weeks, during which losses may be greater due to water loss).

Guide food choices that not only reduce calories, but meet current scientific recommendations for nutritional completeness and reduced disease risk.

Construct an activity plan that provides the full range of weight- and health-related benefits that exercise offers.

Be sustainable. Healthy weight loss is weight loss that lasts, so it is necessary to look beyond losing the excess weight and address keeping it off.

Fits Into Your Life
Second, any Weight Watchers approach must be realistic, practical and livable. It must also be flexible enough so that people can apply the approaches that work well for them. That means encouraging the achievement of realistic goals. For example, we do not recommend that a person with a lot of weight to lose begin with a weight-loss goal that defines ultimate success. Rather, we start with our 10pct. goal or losing 10pct. of body weight (e.g., a 10pct. goal for someone who is 200 pounds is 20 pounds). A weight loss of 10pct. translates into significant health benefits. Likewise, pacing weight loss and following a system that encourages food and activity choices that are livable and sustainable in the real world is key. Weight Watchers is designed on the premise that weight management needs to fit into your life, not be your life.

Informed Choices
Third, Weight Watchers believes in imparting knowledge. At Weight Watchers, people learn not only what to do, but why. This knowledge brings understanding and with understanding comes the confidence needed to make informed choices and live by them.

A Holistic View
Finally, the Weight Watchers approach must be comprehensive. Sustained weight loss comes from taking a holistic view of all its components food, exercise, behavior and a supportive atmosphere.

health notice

The Weight Watchers weight loss plan is developed by respected health professionals. However, Weight Watchers isnt a medical organization and we cant give you medical advice. We strongly urge you to consult with your physician (or primary health-care provider) before starting any weight loss plan. We also urge you to get periodic medical checkups.

Weight loss can create physical changes that should be medically monitored. Studies have shown, for example, that weight loss can aggravate gall bladder illness. Medical monitoring is especially important for people with a known medical condition. The Plan is healthful, but isnt intended to treat any illness or disease.

In addition.

Weight Watchers requires written medical permission to join their Meetings if you are a child under 17 years of age. In addition, teens and women nursing a child who want to attend Meetings must follow a specific plan and policies to meet their specific requirements.

Weight Watchers prohibits participation in its weight loss plan for children under the age of 10, those individuals with an active medical diagnosis of bulimia nervosa, those whose weight is less than 5 pounds above the minimum weight of the Weight Watchers Weight Ranges, and during pregnancy.

Weight Watchers also prohibits subscription to our online weight loss products and offerings by those individuals who are breastfeeding and individuals age 18 years and younger.

If you are being treated for an illness, taking prescription medication, or following a therapeutic diet to treat a disease, its especially important to show the Weight Watchers weight loss plan to your physician. Any modifications made to the plan by your physician should be followed.

The Weight Watchers weight loss plan is designed for a safe rate of weight loss - up to two pounds per week (after the first three weeks). If you lose at a greater rate, you must review the Plan guidelines and adapt them, if necessary, to avoid rapid weight loss. Not following the Plan as designed may pose the risk of developing health complications associated with rapid weight loss.
