2010-08-20 Avoid portion distortion - San Jose Mercury News

A portion is an arbitrary amount of food that you put on your plate, whereas a serving is a specific measurement of food, such as in cups or tablespoons. Serving sizes are used to provide consumers with healthy and appropriate nutrition information and portion-size guidelines. They are used by government agencies like the U. S. Department of Agriculture to recommend standardized amounts of different types of foods needed for health and weight control.

Welcome to America in 2010, the land of gigantic food portions where our restaurants provide us with anything from giant mugs of soda and enormous bags of chips to the endless pasta bowls and super-sized pizza slices. It is clear that the portion size has become grossly overestimated, and our idea of portion sizes is way out of whack. It seems that many people are now confusing portions with

2010-08-19 Weight Loss Surgery: Excess Stomach Removed Via Mouth - ABC News

Horgans procedure isnt such a far cry from standard laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery. It only modifies how the excess stomach is removed from the body. This small change, however, offers an even less invasive approach that doctors say brings bariatric surgery one step closer to an incision-free weight loss surgery.

Via a series of small incisions in the abdomen. Tools, including a camera, are inserted through the incisions, and the stomach is stapled shut, reducing it to about one fifth of its original size.

Surgeons at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center have removed 80 percent of a stomach through a patients mouth. This new procedure, possibly the first of its kind ever performed, allows surgeons to skip the large incision in the abdomen usually made for bariatric surgery and instead make five small incisions and do the procedure laparoscopically. 2010-07-22 Work out, get on scale. tell your friends The Social - CNET News

Yeah, the whole weight loss/control thing is a little touchy. As you stated in the article, folks should weigh themselves about once a week. You can do daily but it needs to be the same time everyday. If I do it daily, I do it first thing in the morning with birthday suite only and bladder emptied. Thats a fairly accurate measure IF youre going to do it daily. Weighing yourself more than that in a day is useless since you are likely to gain a couple and probably a few pounds with fluids and food. Dont panic. A more accurate measure would be to weigh yourself once a week, same day, same time.
