Diabetes Education

Two of the major risk factors for type 2 diabetes are obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Excessive body weight reduces the bodys ability to respond to insulin and is therefore a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Determine your ideal body weight range by visiting the body calculators page.

Regular physical activity lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin sensitivity. According to results of a large study, The Diabetes Prevention Program DPP, weight loss, increased physical activity, and a multi-disciplinary approach decreased the progression from insulin resistance to Type 2 diabetes*.

How is my calorie budget determined.

Your daily calorie budget is determined in one of three ways, depending on your weight goal. 1.If youre on a weight loss program, your daily calorie budget is determined by taking your RMR and calories burned through lifestyle activity the number of calories you need to maintain your weight, then subtracting 500 calories per day for each pound you want to lose per week. It is important to re-measure your RMR during a weight loss program to help you quickly reach your goals without hitting frustrating plateaus. Enter your metabolism measurement into the BalanceLog software to establish your daily calorie budget. Get a new metabolism measurement after 2-3 weeks when your metabolism begins to slow because of weight loss, and continue measuring every four weeks until you reach weight maintenance mode. 2.If youre on a weight maintenance program, your daily calorie budget is based on your RMR and lifestyle. Once exercise is logged, your calorie budget will reflect the number of calories you burned. 3.If youre on a weight gain plan, your daily calorie budget is determined by taking the number of calories you need to maintain your weight and adding 500 calories per day for each pound of desired weekly weight gain, then adding your daily exercise goal calories. If your actual logged exercise calories exceed your exercise goal, then the number of excess calories burned is added to your daily calorie budget. Top

Does metabolism change over time

Metabolism varies from person to person and can change over time. It is determined by many factors including body composition amount of muscle and fat, weight, age, genetics and gender. Weight loss or a change in body composition can significantly affect RMR. Top

I exercise a lot and my resting metabolic rate has not increased.

Aerobic, or cardiovascular, exercise burns calories during the activity, but doesnt have a significant effect on increasing your RMR over time. The calories you burn during aerobic exercise will help you balance the calories you eat. Strength training, on the other hand burns fewer calories during the exercise, but can add more muscle to your body, which can lead to an increase in resting metabolic rate over time. A combination of aerobic exercise and strength training should be included to improve health. Top

Can I increase my RMR

The best and safest method to increase your RMR is to participate in a vigorous strength training program that will add muscle to your body. Muscle burns more calories than fat so having more muscle will lead to an increase in your RMR over time. Top

I have lost weight. Why is my resting metabolic rate lower

A decrease in resting metabolic rate during weight loss is normal. Metabolism is influenced by total body mass your body weight. When you lose weight, your total body mass decreases and it takes less energy for your body to maintain vital functions. In order to minimize this decrease in RMR with weight loss, you can participate in a strength training program. Strength training, if vigorous enough to increase lean muscle mass, can help increase your resting metabolic rate over time because muscle is more metabolically active than fat and burns more calories to maintain, even at rest. weight loss and weight maintenance programs

Behavior modification strategies consist of different techniques that provide tools for overcoming barriers to compliance with dietary changes and increased physical activity. The expert panel for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute NHLBI, after completing an exhaustive review of obesity treatments, recommends that weight loss and weight maintenance programs should employ the combination of low calorie diets, increased physical activity, and behavior modification strategies. They also found that no one behavior therapy appeared superior to any other in its effect on weight loss. the combination of multiple strategies appeared to work best and those interventions with the greatest intensity appeared to be associated with the greatest weight loss1. Unless an individual can acquire a new set of eating and physical activity habits, long-term weight reduction is unlikely to be successful.

Behavior Modification Strategies Used in Weight Management
Programs1, 2

Self-monitoring of Eating Habits and Physical Activity
By keeping a record of the amount and types of food eaten, as well as the frequency, intensity and type of physical activity, individuals become aware of their dietary and physical activity patterns and are able to track their progress. This helps them identify areas for improvement and begin to change their behaviors. Additionally, self-monitoring and feedback can provide the motivation needed to maintain lifestyle changes. Logging foods and physical activity in BalanceLog makes self-monitoring easy.

Managing Stress
Stress management can help individuals deal with situations that may lead to overeating. Stress reduction techniques may include the development of coping strategies, meditation and relaxation. After a long stressful day, an individual can take a walk around the block to unwind rather than satisfying a craving for sweets.

Controlling Food Cues
Identifying the cues that stimulate thoughts about food allows individuals to develop strategies for controlling cues associated with overeating and limiting their exposure to high-risk situations. For example, if an individual tends to overeat while watching television, he can be advised to modify his reaction to the cue by eating a portion controlled snack while watching television, or eliminate the cue entirely by not watching television.

Problem Solving
Problem solving skills allow individuals to identify a current or potential problem, devise a solution, implement it, and evaluate its effectiveness. Individuals should be encouraged to reevaluate setbacks in behavior rather than punishing themselves. For example, an individual who has difficulty finding time to exercise due to traveling may resolve to walk around the airport during layovers.

Rewarding Success
Rewards may be used to help individuals modify their behaviors. Verbal, social or monetary rewards should be encouraged, such as buying a new pair of shoes after walking 10,000 steps each day for the first week. It is better to reward many small successes than one large success that may require a long, difficult effort.

Setting Realistic Goals
Unrealistic goals about weight loss and body image need to be modified so that individuals do not set themselves up for failure. A persons belief in their abilities is an important predictor of success. Individuals need to use realistic strategies for achieving their weight management goals. Help individuals focus on improvements in their quality of life, such as increased energy and being able to keep up with their children, and worry less about the ultimate number of pounds lost. Goals should be specific, realistic, and forgiving.

How much weight do I need to lose before I feel better

One of the first things you must do is get an idea of what you might weigh if you were average. Tools like the Body Mass Index Calculator are a good place to start. However, keep in mind that if you have been overweight for a long time there are many steps between your current weight and one that you might consider ideal. The good news is that you are likely to start feeling better -- healthier and more energetic -- fairly early in the weight loss process. If you have been heavy for a long time, even a 5-10weight loss can significantly reduce health risks and make a big difference in how good you feel. Top

Im very heavy and afraid to exercise. How do I avoid injury while getting started

The first step is probably one youve heard before, but well say it again here -- check with your physician before starting ANY exercise program. Make sure and listen to your body. It will often tell you if you are overdoing it. That said, start with low impact physical activities such as walking, swimming, bicycling or water aerobics. These are good choices for beginners because they tend to isolate joints from bodyweight. Top

Is it OK to have a snack before dinner

It seems like most of us are busier than ever these days. With that hectic pace, dinner tends to come later in the day than it once did. If this is the case in your home, and youre not eating dinner until 7.00 or later, its a good idea to have a small snack at 4.00 or 5.00. This will help keep your hunger in check and prevent you from wolfing down too much food at dinner. Top

What are empty calories

When people talk about empty calories, they are typically referring to foods that are high in calories derived from sugar - especially refined sugars and corn syrup. Not only do these foods tend to be high in calories and low in nutritional value, they tend to burn rapidly, causing a spike in blood sugar levels followed by a rapid energy slump. For more consistent energy levels, choose foods with natural energy sources such as fruits or cheese. Top

What are some ways to avoid overeating at social events

Believe it or not, eating before a party can save you from overeating. Try to have a small, well balanced meal including protein and carbs to minimize food cravings. Drinking plenty of water can also fill you up and reduce your urge to overindulge. Top

Why does my weight vary from day to day, even though I faithfully stick to my diet

Are you weighing yourself every day If so, you may be getting the wrong message. Real weight loss takes time. Youre doing a great job if you lose a pound of fat a week. True weight loss is most accurately measured if you weigh yourself every two weeks. Otherwise, you might be seeing the results of water weight and dehydration. Top

What Is Metabolism
Metabolism is the biochemical process of combining nutrients with oxygen to release the energy our bodies need to function. Metabolism is typically measured in kilocalories or, more commonly, calories. Total metabolic rate represents the calories needed for maintaining body functions, daily activity occupational and lifestyle, and the energy cost of exercise or planned activity.

What is RMR
Resting metabolic rate RMR represents the calories the body burns to maintain vital body functions heart rate, brain function, breathing. In simple terms, it is the number of calories a person would burn if they were awake, but at rest all day. RMR can represent up to 75of a persons total metabolism if they are inactive or lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Why is it necessary to measure RMR
Since RMR accounts for up to 75of the total calories we need each day, its a critical piece of information to appropriately establish daily calorie needs, whether were trying to lose or maintain weight. Most healthcare and fitness professionals recognize that metabolism is impacted by a variety of characteristics such as fever, illness, high fitness, obesity, active weight loss, etc. When managing a client or patients nutritional needs and calorie requirements, knowledge of RMR is critically important. Traditionally, healthcare professionals, who have not had access to measurement technology, have relied on estimates of RMR. Because metabolism is different among individuals, estimating can lead to errors, and inaccurate calorie budgets. As a result of these estimates, individuals can be both over- or under-eating, and not be successful in reaching their personal goals. As technology advances, professionals must reassess their practices. The most accurate assessment of caloric needs is by measuring oxygen consumption and determining individual metabolism. The BodyGem and MedGem devices by HealtheTech are tools that will provide information vital for determining a personalized calorie budget, based on individual metabolism, necessary to achieve and maintain proper weight and nutrition. Additionally, the BodyGem and MedGem devices play a significant role in providing individuals daily caloric needs to improve individual care through nutrition assessment.

How do you measure RMR
Metabolic rate is traditionally assessed using either direct or indirect calorimetry. Direct calorimetry requires the precise measure of heat output using a large, expensive and technically complex whole body calorimeter. Indirect calorimetry determines metabolic rate from the oxygen consumption of an individual. Oxygen consumption measurements are typically done with a medical device called a metabolic cart. These devices are relatively expensive, 20,000 - 50,000, require technical expertise to operate, and require routine maintenance and calibration. Over the past 10 years, HealtheTech has harnessed revolutionary new technology to develop the BodyGem and MedGem, handheld devices that can measure oxygen consumption and determine an individuals caloric needs. Measuring oxygen consumption, rather than using population-based predictive equations, allows health and fitness professionals to make the most accurate decisions for their clients. With a simple breath test of 10 minutes or less, an individual can now have their unique metabolism measured, for determination of a personalized calorie budget.

Why is RMR Unique to Each Individual Why Would It Change
RMR is influenced by a number of factors, such as. body mass, body composition the amount of fat and muscle, age, gender and hormones. Muscle burns more calories than fat. a person with a higher percentage of muscle will have a higher RMR. In an example from a recent weight management study, subject 1 is a woman who weighs 158 pounds, a body fat percentage of 33pct., and a measured RMR of 1571 calories per day. Subject 2 is a woman who also weighs 158 pounds, but has a body fat percentage of 48and a measured RMR of 1252 calories per day. At the same weight, similar height, and same age, these women have very different RMR values due to differences in body composition. RMR declines naturally in adults at a rate of about 2per decade, however, this decrease is primarily a result of muscle loss. Men normally have a higher metabolism than women, partly because they tend to have a higher percentage of muscle compared to women. Certain hormones can also increase or decrease metabolism. Additionally, the metabolic response to stress and injury influences RMR and necessitates measurement of VO2 rather than using formula-based estimates. Estimation equations do not take into account individual variability, pre-existing medical conditions, or the numerous other factors present that can affect RMR.

Weight Loss
When individuals lose weight, their metabolism may decrease. This should not be alarming because the decrease in metabolism is a result of tissue loss fat and muscle. Weight loss ideally results in proportionately more fat loss and some muscle loss. Strength training during weight loss can lessen the muscle loss, but most people will experience some muscle loss. During weight loss, the body may also lower metabolism in response to a lower calorie intake. Most people experience this change in metabolism without realizing it. Weight loss may be easy for the first few pounds and then weight loss becomes more difficult and may even plateau. At a lower metabolism, an individual must adjust dietary intake or increase activity through exercise to lose additional weight. The good news is that after weight loss, metabolism may increase slightly once the individuals weight is stable. During weight loss, it is helpful to monitor changes in metabolism and make necessary adjustments to food intake for successful weight management.

I just wanted to share my story with all of the creators, the spectators and believers of the BalanceLog healthy lifestyle companion tool. I am 23 years old and have a history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Before the program, I used to have chest pains and heart palpitations when I worked out. My doctor said it was due to my weight. Since Ive been on the program, I have lost a total of 30 pounds and have lost 5of body fat which was my goal. I achieved this in only three months. I am in the best and healthiest physical condition I have ever been in my life. I have made believers of my family and friends and some have started the program as well. It astounds me how simple and easy this program is to use. The one main point that BalanceLog has taught me is to eat to live and not live to eat. Thank you BalanceLog for saving my life.
- Ed Guzman, Jr. Milpitas, CA

I think I have been on every diet that has ever existed. Weight watchers, low carb, high protein, low fat, cabbage soup, juice fasting, slim fast. None of these diets ever worked for me in the long term. Why because I was not learning habits that would result in permanent weight loss. I realized that there is one thing that all these diets have in common... calorie restriction. The makers of BalanceLog know that the ONLY way to lose weight is calories in vs calories out. You can follow virtually any eating program using the BalanceLog program. I think BalanceLog is the best nutrition software available on the market today. I have tried different online and PC based diet programs, but BalanceLog is by far the best, because you can use it on your PDA. The program is handy to use because you always have your PDA with you and you enter foods as you eat them, unlike other programs where you have to keep a memory of your foods and exercise until you can get to a PC to enter it. The features of the software are outstanding, and the program is so easy to use I only had to consult the owners manual once. This program is well worth every penny. I initially downloaded the trial version and used it for 3 days and I was convinced BalanceLog was the answer to all my weight loss struggles. I love BalanceLog and I am going to continue to use it throughout my weight loss program and onto maintenance.
- Mia from California on Handango

I tried the 14 day trial thinking that I wouldnt need it after 14 days or would be tired of entering every tiny thing that I ate but I was wrong. After using the program I realized that it is well worth the cost and the few seconds that it takes for me to enter in the data. The best part of this program is how dynamic it is. It incorporates personal measurements like body fat percentage, resting metabolic rate, whether you are big/small/medium boned, BMI, current weight, weight loss/gain goal in a specified amount of time, occupational lifestyle, how much you sleep, which diet plan you would like to use ex. American cancer society, American heart assoc., 8 options total, etc. The food database doesnt cover everything, but enough to realistically improvise. Dont plan on buying this if you are going to cheat or if you dont plan on exercising. You must log in every little snack. This was most beneficial to me to be conscious of what I ate because the little things count too and gave me an exercise goal to work towards instead of just working out regularly. THERE ARE NO DIET SECRETS... Eating right and exercising is all there is to it. If you dont exercise and eat right, you need to change your lifestyle and this is the perfect way to do it.
- Kathy Salisbury from Bozeman, Montana

I tried the trial but didnt think I would really use this. I have never dieted or even cared much about what I eat. I wanted to lose about 15 pounds. This program has been an eye-opener for me. I am so much more aware of what I eat. I have used it for about 5 weeks and have lost 12 pounds. My wife was so impressed she started using it and lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks. When everyone around me is doing the Atkins thing it is so nice to say you are doing better and there are no tricks or special menus. Just watch the calories and it works. I have recommended this program to a lot of folks. It is great.
- Dave Cook from Rochester, NY on Handango

Program works great and is easy to use. This program has to be easy to use, because my wife, who is a complete Palm novice, uses it every day. On the subject of , I have lost 35 lbs and am keeping my cholesterol under control. Thats less to me.
- Roger from Scottsdale, Arizona on Handango

This program is really simple to use and gives you complete info on all the foods you eat or are planning to eat, meal by meal. You can even add your own foods to the database from the package nutrition info. By keeping exact track of my consumption, nutritionally and calorie wise, I was able to actually lose the weight I wanted to. 40 pounds over a 6-month period, and kept it off another 6 months so far. It keeps you honest with yourself if you are trying to diet. Since I have my Palm with me all the time, it is easy to enter data. I recommend this program to everyone, no matter what the .

Ive struggled with losing weight my entire life. Three months of using BalanceLog and Im now 30 pounds lighter and on my way to losing the next 30. Moderate exercise and a good diet are definitely all that are needed to lose weight. Ive spent hundreds on exercise equipment and weight loss gimmicks over the years, and apparently all I really needed was BalanceLog. Excellent software. Intuitive. Informative. When someone asks me the secret, I tell them. Get a handheld and load this software.
- Eric S. Roberts, Goose Creek, SC

Seriously, thank you for creating BalanceLog. I use it solely on my Palm PDA Sony Clie NR70V, and it has truly helped me to shape my life and lifestyle to what Ive always wanted them to be. Since 12/4/02, when I decided that Id better shape up my life, or I never would Im 22, Ive lost 31 lbs. Im 510, and I was 198 lbs, definitely not obese, but most certainly overweight. BalanceLog help me set reasonable goals -- I loved the first time I set an unreasonable goal and it yelled at me for attempting to lose more than 2 lbs or so a week. I definitely wanted to change my lifestyle, and not just lose weight so I wanted to do things the right way. Being about 167-8 lbs now, I am near a nice, lean body composition for my frame and height, so Im definitely simply attempting to maintain my muscle mass and current weight in general. The only thing I can say to friends and relatives who havent seen me since last December, especially when they ask whats your secret is. Its simple. to change my lifestyle, all I had to do was change my lifestyle. Thanks for writing the software that helped me change my lifestyle.

In January of 2001 I weighed in a biscuit shy of 360 lbs. My kids wanted to go skiing and I knew that was out of the question. I started on Slimfast, and after some success I bought your DietLog and ExerLog software. I am convinced that the ease of keeping my food diary in a PDA has been the key to my success. Nine months after starting my diet I had lost 140lbs and ran the Chicago Marathon in Oct of 2001. Two years later I am still at my goal weight and in the best shape of my life. How many 42 year olds can say that My weight has yo-yoed in 100lb increments at least 4 times in my life, but thanks to the ease of keeping a journal and tracking my exercise in BalanceLog I know I can maintain a healthy weight. I continue to run and train others to run half marathons as well as triathlons and weight train. My mom tells me I am very handsome and people cant imagine that I have lost over 150lbs. Lets get the message out. This is the key to the future for so many people fighting overeating.

Your BalanceLog program is absolutely amazing. I have always known I have a very slow metabolism. The RMR analysis proved it. Even with daily workouts on the treadmill, I still struggle to lose weight. The BalanceLog has given me so much insight to my eating habits. The very first day I realized my protein and fat percentages were below recommended levels, but my carbohydrates were too high. I am trying to adjust ratios now. I have recommended your product to several of my friends including one exercise physiologist who is also a personal trainer. They have purchased BalanceLog too. I would like to pass along a helpful hint for those people who love to cook as much as I do. I found a fabulous software product called The Living Cookbook www.livingcookbook.com that solved my dilemma of how to calculate the Nutrition Facts for those recipes where the information is not provided such as anything on epicurious.com . The Living Cookbook has a capture feature that allows you to copy any recipe from the web and paste it into a new recipe. Once the ingredients are linked to the USDA nutrients database included in the product, the recipe automatically formats the Nutrition Facts in the exact layout that you would find on the back of any packaged food product. From the Food Log, I just enter a new food that contains just the recipe title and nutrition facts. Between the BalanceLog and the Living Cookbook, I have a diet and nutrition management solution that will last a lifetime. Your competitors are so far in the dust. The GUI interface and PDA synch are truly what sets your product apart from others.
- Martha

I agree with all the comments made by the 5-star reviewers. This software is thorough, intuitive, and works. Keep in mind Version 2.0 came out in Jan 03. Negative remarks about the food database and GUI have been addressed. Database is customizable. you can add any food or exercise activity you want. Just during my 14-day trial period I lost more weight than any diet or exercise program I have ever used and Im still going strong. I consider this one of the best software titles of ANY category I have ever bought.

I have lost 30 pounds in just 60 days....with no exercise.... This program keeps me on track. I know with a touch of a button what I have ate and how much more I can eat to meet my daily goal. I never knew how many calories I was really eating before, but now I do and it is so easy to use.
- Penny Sailors from McCook, NE on Handango

I was 58 years old, over 125 pounds overweight, and, as a result of surgery, with no thyroid. All the excuses for not losing weight. I had tried several PDA-based plans prior to BalanceLog but, for one reason or another, nothing worked. On September 1st of 2002 I stumbled upon BalanceLog and downloaded a Trial version, and on September 3rd I began changing my life. Its now 20 weeks later and I have lost 66 pounds. During they way I have set 4 different weight goals and have broken them all - and all ahead of schedule. I have begun exercising and actually enjoy it. I have given away all my 4XL clothes and am now fitting into XL, although that will change too. I am getting noticed by my friends and co-workers who keep on asking me how Im doing it. I tell them about BalanceLog and how my being able to log my food, exercise and weight loss through the software make it all possible. I just got thru the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years holidays without any problems, aside from exchanging Christmas clothes for smaller sizes. I know its takes a lot of willpower but having BalanceLog on both my PDA and PC makes it all possible. By keeping track of my caloric and nutritional input, and comparing it to what I should be having to maintain my goal plan, I can see beforehand if my meals and/or snacks would deter me from reaching my goal. All this and its both flexible and easy to use. All I can say is, Thank You HealtheTech for helping me help myself to a better life.

I just wanted to let you know how much I love the BalanceLog program, and how instrumental its been in my weight loss in the past year. In January of 2001, my doctor prescribed a calorie-counting regimen. I had limited success at first. counting calories seemed to work but it was hard to do consistently and I was forever trying to figure out how many calories were in each type of food. My husband discovered BalanceLog and we installed it on our laptops and our Palm devices. I was an instant BalanceLog fan. With its extensive food database and the fact that it was on my Palm, I was able to easily track my food intake at each meal - BalanceLog definitely made it so I could plan and adjust my caloric intake in real-time. I was 206 pounds back in January of 2001. last week I hit 156 and Balance Log congratulated me on reaching my goal. Im 511, so the 50 lb weight loss means Ive gone from a size 16 to a size 10. Im a very detail-oriented person as well as a technologist, so BalanceLog works just right for me. Im able to create reports over a weekly and monthly basis - its easy for me to pinpoint the intake levels at which I have the most success. Once I got my RMR measured, the math became even easier - I knew exactly what my calorie intake needed to be for me to reach my eventual goal. Thanks again for making such a great product.
- Marie Turner

I travel for work and have trouble keeping track of what I eat and how much exercise I get. This application is easy to use and is very convenient. I also purchased the desktop version which I highly recommend as it allows editing of added foods. Ive had no trouble installing or syncing. In conjunction with one of the myriad diet plans available on the web, this application is invaluable.

Experts consistently agree that the only way to lose weight is to eat less and move more. I believe that the only way to eat less is to carefully monitor intake, and BalanceLog for desktop and handheld is the easiest method Ive found. I started using BalanceLog about 6 months ago and easily lost 15 pounds in about 10 weeks. I have not gained the weight back in over 3 months, so I set a new goal today to lose 15 more pounds. I had been about 30 pounds overweight for 10 years, and had never maintained weight loss until I started using BalanceLog.
- Joel Hughes, Ph.D., Durham, NC

I am very impressed with your program. When I purchased my Sony Clie PDA a trial version was included. Thank God. I have never been able to stick to a diet. Having had open-heart surgery 7 years ago and another blockage in July of this year, it is very important that I watch what I eat. I began using your program August 3, 2002. So far I have lost 7lbs without starving or being hungry. Having BalanceLog with me makes it so easy to track what I eat during the day. Thanks for developing an aid that actually works.

I have tried them all and this is the best diet and exercise tracking program around. I purchased both the PDA and desktop versions and they work perfectly together. This is easy to use, has an extensive data base that you can add to, and has great graphics.

The day I started this program I weighed 293 lbs. and had a body fat level near 60pct.. Today I weigh 180 lbs., which represents a weight loss of 113 lbs. and a change in my body fat level to a much healthier 36pct.. One of the biggest thrills of my recent life has been to be able to go to some of the stores I love and buy clothes off the rack that will actually fit me. BalanceLog has taught me how to eat, set achievable boundaries for me, and given me an easy, reliable, non-embarrassing way to be held accountable for what goes into my mouth. Because of BalanceLog and BodyGem, my daughter has a healthier, happier mommy, and that is, perhaps, the most wonderful motivation of all.

I wanted to send thanks to the creators of BalanceLog. Ive just completed a weight loss program, 11 pounds in 11 weeks, and I am thrilled. ... Never-until now-have I felt that my weight was something I could choose and control.
