2010-03-13 A Weight Loss Plan That Works. (or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the gym. ) : The Questionable AuthorityBut its the exercise thats probably (almost certainly) made the biggest difference. I went from swimming somewhere between 500 and 1500 meters five times a week to swimming that distance plus getting in at least 45 minutes of cardio per day - at least initially. More recently, Ive been shifting my focus more from losing the weight toward getting into a routine that I can maintain that will keep the weight off. Ive been working out less - every other day instead of daily - and Ive adjusted my diet so that Im eating just slightly less than the number of calories I need at the weight and activity level I want to maintain. This has slowed the weight loss, but I think its giving me a better chance at keeping the weight off.
2010-03-12 MinnPost - Of wine, women and weight lossNot too surprisingly, the study found that, on average, all the women gained some weight. Indeed, 41 percent of the women became either overweight or obese (based on BMI calculations) during the course of the study. But, the study found that those who tended to gain the most weight were the women who abstained from alcohol even after adjusting the data for such factors as smoking, physical activity levels, postmenopausal hormone use, and history of diabetes and high blood pressure.
2010-03-10 Study: Women Who Drink Tend to Be Thinner - TIMEIts worth noting that while replacing some foods with alcohol may seem like an enticing weight-loss loophole, it isnt necessarily good for health. "Displacing 200 calories or so from food with alcohol probably has a detrimental effect on diet quality and on overall health," notes Dr. David Katz, director and co-founder of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. "If you look meticulously at nutrient intake there might be important deficiencies there. " Second, there is evidence that alcohol may cause physiologic changes to appetite and metabolism that may drive women to lose weight as they drink more. Women may metabolize alcohol differently from men, using a more inefficient, high-energy process that causes them to burn more of the calories from alcohol than men, which in turn leads to a net loss in caloric intake. But more research is needed to determine exactly how women process alcohol and the different ways in which the liquid calories are absorbed by the body. "Its very likely there is a combination of physiologic, metabolic and some behavioral changes," says Manson regarding the association between drinking and weight. New findings suggest that women who drink moderately are less likely to gain weight over time than those who dont.
2010-03-09 Is There a Low-Carb Diet GeneIn terms of weight loss, the results were what we usually see in diet studies - some weight loss, and no big difference between the groups. But then came the big twist. Of the hundreds of genes which have been associated with obesity, the researchers chose three which were judged to potentially have an impact on how individuals metabolize food. When these genes were analyzed in the study participants, the whole picture of weight loss shifted. 2010-03-08 DNA test can predict best dietA simple DNA test based on the variations of three main genes known to regulate the metabolism of fat and carbohydrates in the body can help individuals choose the weight loss diet which works best for them. While many individuals fail to respond properly to certain diets, a new genetic test has been devised that helps choose the best weight loss diet. According to the study presented at the annual epidemiology and prevention conference meeting of the American Heart Association, individuals following a diet which matches their genotype lose 2 to 3 times more weight compared with those on the wrong diet. - DNA gene genetics diet weight obesity weight-loss health low-carb low-fat genotype nutrient
2010-03-07 Week Eight: Dustin The GatewaySummary week is once again upon us. After my dismal results last month, I was nervous about February. It feels like there were many times when I strayed from my path and although I have been feeling better, I still worry that I am optimistically imagining any advances. I have been trying hard to stick to a more strict diet. By diet, I dont mean a fad claiming to bring on weight loss. I am referring to the fact that I now eat more fruit, drink more water and avoid fast food.
2010-03-06 Frosted Flakes, a Dieters Best Friend - Food - The AtlanticThe European Food Safety Authority to be allowed to put claims for weight loss on its breakfast cereals: "Ready-to-eat breakfast cereal can help to reduce body weight, can help to reduce body fat, can help to reduce waist circumference. " EFSA, I hope, will turn this one down flat. I want to see the science before believing that breakfast cereals are diet products. Sure they are, if you eat just one serving for breakfast, use one more to substitute for a meal, and then eat a small meal. That would work. But so would chocolate bars. 2010-03-05 A Different Kind of Food FightIn addition, manufactured and processed foods are all inherently high in sodium. People, who struggle with weight issues, often have also heart disease and hypertension to be concerned about. A diet high in sodium only adds to the risks. All three of the McDonalds Weight Watchers approved meals have high sodium contents between 407 mg and 801 mg each. That is a third to over a half of the daily allowance recommended for heart disease patients in only one meal. If you count the salad dressings, even the lighter ones, the sodium levels get pushed over the limit right there and then. These issues matter greatly and more attention must be paid to No matter where you stand politically, sometimes you have to marvel when you see how free markets work. What Morgan Spurlock, the film maker of Super Size Me, could not achieve with his anti-fast-food crusade, is happening now: McDonalds has jumped
