An overview comparing individuals who lost weight through surgery versus non-surgical means discovered surgical cases report "higher fat intake and lower physical activity levels"; that is, they maintained their unhealthy lifestyles even after weight loss.

Dani, re your quick fix comment, I have the gastric band and I can tell you I have engaged in at least 15 different diet programs at some point over my life. And not just for a day or two - for months or years at a time. I have also been a gym junkie, a compulsive exerciser and on three different diet drugs over 25 years. I have also lost and regained the same weight over and over again, each time gaining more weight than I lost (this is typical of diets: they actually cause weight gain over the long term). Many of the people I know who have the band have done similar. Face it: this issue is not as simple as you wish it was. Ian Michell, I think youll find that Jill Singer is in fact referring to Rick Kausman. Sloppy journalism. And TP, for the record, I dont own a TV.

As the centers only surgeon, Dr. Nguyen is not yet able to offer more invasive surgeries that typically result in more weight loss than gastric banding. But he hopes eventually, when the center staffs more surgeons, to be able to do sleeve gastrectomies, which involve removing about 70 percent of the stomach. This surgery also reduces the hormone that causes hunger and, unlike gastric banding, is not reversible, he said.

But surgery is not the only weight-loss option the bariatric center offers. Also on staff are dietitians, a physical therapist and psychologists who can help patients address their obesity medically, rather than surgically. Overseeing this medical side of the center which should be fully operational in January, Dr. Nguyen said will be Dr. Maureen Boyle, who works in obstetrics and gynecology.

According to Maggard, one of the most urgent unresolved questions regarding bariatric surgery has to do with the effectiveness of oral contraceptives in women who have had the procedure. Currently, no randomized trials have assessed the efficacy of birth control pills after bariatric procedures, including ones that affect the absorption of drugs and nutrients. Maggard said, "Until we have some better answers about oral contraceptives, women should consider other methods, such as barrier methods, to prevent unwanted pregnancies. " She added that women who had had the surgery should "defer pregnancy until after the time of rapid weight loss," or about one year (Rabin,

In Health Watch: Theres a new device that may help overweight people In Health Watch: Theres a new device that may help overweight people who dont want to undergo gastric bypass surgery. Doctors in Boston are hopeful the less invasive endobarrier liner will help patients lose weight and get healthier. Doctors place the 2 foot plastic sleeve inside the intestine using an endoscope. SOT-Dr. Dmitry Nepomnayshy, Lahey Clinic: "It prevents food from contacting the first part of the small intestine. and it prevents digestive juices from mixing with that food, so essentially duplicating that effect of the gastric bypass. "No surgery is needed with the endobarrier. But the results arent as dramatic. The average patient lost between 12 and 24 pounds in the three-month trial. Still, doctors think it may help obese people who dont

For years, Ikramuddin has performed weight-loss surgery the minimally invasive way, through five or six small incisions in the abdomen. But now hes taking part in a national study to test a device that goes in through the mouth.

At the University of Minnesota, surgeons are getting ready to perform weight-loss surgery with another experimental device that slides down the mouth to the stomach.

But Dr. Sayeed Ikramuddin, a surgeon at the University of Minnesota, says its a natural next step in the evolution of surgery. Once, 20 years ago, the only way to remove a gallbladder was with a large incision. Then along came "keyhole" or laparoscopic surgery that required only a few tiny slits in the skin. So why not imagine a device that could operate through one small slit Or none "Its where were trying to go," he said, "which is really hands off. "

The review found that the rates of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes were significantly lower for women who had the weight-loss surgery. Also, the risk of premature birth and a low birth weight were similar or better for the surgery patients, said Melinda A. Maggard, M.

While a sure fire weight loss cure does not exist, Alli is a useful tool in your weight loss arsenal. The only other medical intervention that causes weight loss is weight loss surgery which is invasive and potentially dangerous.

Alli weight loss aid is the latest diet craze. Its simply an over-the-counter version is the diet drug orlistat. Known as Xenical, orlistat was widely researched, and in double blind testing found to be effective for weight loss. Alli is a lower dose than the prescription drug, yet effective if used in combination with a low fat diet and exercise.
