With obesity and diet-related chronic diseases at an all-time high, we felt it was important to review the hundreds of new scientific studies that join the archive of high-level research on the healthfulness of eating a Mediterranean-style diet, and update the pyramid," said Frank Sacks, MD, professor of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at Harvard, and scientific committee co-chair. "These studies suggest that healthy diet and lifestyle practices, like those associated with the Mediterranean Diet, can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more. "

For lifestyle and risk factor changes at 3 years: physical activity score (higher score indicates more physical activity) was 7. 5 pct. versus 7. 1 pct. , dietary habit score (higher score indicates a more Mediterranean-like diet) was 64. 4 pct. versus 56. 1 pct. , low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was 105 mg/dl versus 106 mg/dl, body mass index was 27. 0 kg/m

Among patients with recent acute myocardial infarction, the implementation of an integrated, multifactorial, and comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program nonsignificantly reduces major adverse cardiac events over 3 years of follow-up compared with usual care. All individual adverse outcomes were nonsignificantly lower with cardiac rehabilitation; however, myocardial infarction was significantly reduced by this approach. While physical activity and dietary habits were improved at 3 years with cardiac rehabilitation, most risk factors (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, body mass index, and glycated hemoglobin) were fairly similar between the groups. The rate of smoking discontinuation was slightly greater with cardiac rehabilitation at the extent of follow-up.

Choices and value. Comfort food. More options, not a rigid menu. Push for flavor exploration. And healthy food in food service," he said. "And Mediterranean food has it all. Its awash in cost-saving foods and meals. Twenty-five years ago, pesto with garlic was exotic. Not anymore. And the Mediterranean diet has become the model for healthy eating. "

To give you some idea of the intensity of the program, the conference started at 4 and thinsp;p. m. Thursday evening with two seminars and 13 chefs doing cooking demonstrations. The evening ended around 7:30 p. m. with a dinner where we walked around sampling wines and foods from the Mediterranean. The next two days were packed with more demos and cooking classes and more food sampling, including a lunch where two whole lambs had been roasted over an open fire outside.

Who says theres no such thing as a win-win With a Mediterranean Diet you can have delicious meals and live long enough to show your grandchildren how to eat a healthy diet as well.

As for red wine, a glass with dinner, is generally considered to be a wise addition to your diet. That does not mean consuming a bottle of wine every night is a path to good health. If you dont drink alcohol, consider a glass of grape juice. It has many, not all, of the health benefits found in a glass of wine.

Walnuts from California are literally part of the Mediterranean diet. Spain is one of the most enthusiastic importers. But closer to home, nuts are making their way into creative dishes on restaurant menus and in recipes for home cooking.

Studies suggest that eating ounces per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and not increasing overall caloric intake may reduce the risk of heart disease. But its interesting to note that does not apply to Brazil nuts, macadamias and cashews, which are higher in saturated fats than other nuts.
