That was made especially clear in 2008, when sharp increases in the price of palm oil and dietary staples such as wheat, rice, corn and soybeans seemed to herald a new era of higher food prices. In U. S. supermarkets, it meant the biggest rise in grocery bills in nearly two decades. Elsewhere, food riots broke out and the Haitian government fell as suddenly higher prices unleashed a desperate scramble for food.

The quest for cheap food has helped transform palm oil from an inexpensive cooking oil used mostly in developing nations to an all-but-invisible staple of the western diet. But with an ever larger portion of our food now coming from the farthest corners of the globe, the price we pay at the grocery store is more and more tied to events beyond our control.

The Medifast diet plan itself is usually referred to as the Medifast 5 and 1 plan. Basically, this includes five different Medifast diet foods and then a meal that you make yourself from fresh food. Your homemade meal is known as the "lean and green" serving. Once upon at time, their food was pretty much just shakes, shakes and more shakes. But nowadays their diet products include a decent variety of shakes, bars, soups, and hot drinks. Theres also a couple of different pudding mixtures and some oatmeal varieties that you can use too.

Myrta Kaulard, country director for the U. N. Nations World Food Program, said the food aid organization is really concerned about the crisis that may be brewing, especially in hard-to-reach pockets of the country. She recently visited Cazale, another mountain village just north of Port-au-Prince where 20 severely malnourished children were being treated by an aid group.

World Food Program, along with the U. S. Agency for International Development and other relief groups, have responded by working to increase food programs.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in North America. Diet programs, books, programs and media machines that promote Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, the Zone and the like, as well as the too numerous to mention fad diets have led to both bulges around our waist and bulges in the collective wallets of the heads of the diet industry. Sadly, in spite of decades of diets, hours of Tae Bo, aerobics, and Arnold pumping us up, we, collectively and individually are fatter than ever. Despite annually spending hundreds of millions of dollars on weight loss supplements and drugs, the rate of obesity increase weighs in at a 25 pct. increase over the past decade. Not surprisingly, parallel increases are seen in rates of chronic low back pain, heart attacks, diabetes, stroke, bowel disorders and cancer. The combined rate

The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation has debunked the notion that Diet Coke can cause or worsen multiple sclerosis symptoms. Its verdict is backed up by the Food and Drug Administration and other organizations. The notion that Diet Coke can cause neurological disorders may be based on an observation years ago by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which found that aspartame seemed linked to mild neurological problems.

Some people still refuse to use microwaves, believing they cause cancer. About 90 percent of Americans have plastic residue called phthalates in their urine because they microwave in plastic, and its chemicals can migrate into food, especially at high temperatures. Only plastic containers specifically designed for microwave cooking should be used. Discard them when they show signs of breaking down.

High rate of obesity in United States is attributed to fast food culture. Recent research revealed that many fast-food meals begin with a single ingredient: corn. Research team led by A. Hope Jahren, a geo-biologist and professor at the University of Hawaii reached this conclusion after analyzing 480 fast food products at three restaurants from each of the three major chains in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Denver, Boston and Baltimore.

A. Hope Jahren said: "We found that corn is not just a grain used in the production of fast food, it is the basis of all fast food. Of the hundreds of fast-food meals we purchased across the country, there were only about 12 servings of food that could potentially be traced back to something besides corn. "

The study is among a growing mountain of evidence that nutrition during pregnancy matters a lot. The researchers from Rockefeller University examined the effects of feeding pregnant rats a high-fat diet for two weeks compared with a balanced diet with a moderate amount of fat. The rats born to mothers who ate the high-fat diet ate more, weighed more throughout life and began puberty sooner than those born to mothers who ate a balanced diet -- even though the high-fat diet was removed at birth. The offspring of the high-fat diet rodents had higher triglycerides at birth, as well.
