2006-09-14 The Scientist : Eat Your Way to Better DNA

Ordovas group, which takes a classic nutrigenetics approach, has gone beyond APOA1 and has found polymorphisms in other genes that are modulated by dietary fat intake. For example, most people have a common allele in the gene for hepatic lipase, an enzyme that plays a role in regulating plasma lipids, and are able to regulate HDL and low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the "bad" cholesterol) levels in the presence of dietary fat. "Our lipid system maintains homeostasis by increasing HDL, so you maintain a kind of constant LDL to HDL ratio," Ordovas explains. But people who carry a rare allele in hepatic lipase have trouble maintaining this balance, and when they consume more fat, their HDL goes down nd the LDL still goes up. "You get into a very dangerous situation when these people consume a high-fat diet,"

It has become very difficult for Kashmiries to restrict their level of cholesterol due to their eating habits. I must add here that Wazwan is the main source of high cholesterol levels in Kashmiries. To prevent this we should get our blood tested regularly and also make sure cholesterol level is maintained and in order to reduce the amount of blood cholesterol, we must reduce our consumption of fatty things like eggs, butter, products made from whole milk, most cooking oils and red meat. It had been found that cholesterol in the blood can be lowered by keeping daily intake of cholesterol below 200 to 300 mgs per day. Our bodies are designed to consume pure water as a fluid, not colas, coffee, tea or other man-made innovations. Consumption of eight to ten glasses of water a day should be a normal practice especially after getting up

2006-09-11 Hamptons Online - Guide to the Hamptons and East End of Long Island

It is fairly common knowledge these days that high cholesterol is a bad thing. High cholesterol has been listed by various authorities such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a risk factor for heart disease. The current acceptable level of blood cholesterol is a reading of 200 mg/dL. As you approach and exceed this number your doctor will most likely begin talking about lowering your cholesterol. Accepting advice on an issue such as controlling your blood cholesterol, which can weigh heavily on your health and is closely related to your risk of developing life threatening cardiovascular disease, should not be done lightly. There have been promising studies relating to exercise, diet, and cholesterol and the empirical evidence is abundant. Keep in mind that your

The findings: This study analyzed data from 129 overweight or obese young adults who were assigned randomly to eat one of four diets for 12 weeks. Two diets were high-carbohydrate diets and two were high-protein diets; one of each had a high glycemic index and the others had a low glycemic index. All participants were weighed weekly on electronic scales and blood samples were taken at weeks six and 12. Those on diets with a low glycemic index lost about 80 pct. more fat mass than those on high glycemic-index diets. Participants on the high-protein, high glycemic index diet had increased levels of total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, while those on the high- protein, low-glycemic index diet and high carbohydrate, low- glycemic index diet experienced reductions in total and LDL cholesterol.

HDL and LDL are two different kinds of cholesterol that are measured as an index of a patients risk for cardiovascular disease. HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein and LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein. Total cholesterol measures the combination of HDL and LDL, along with several other factors. The levels of "fats" in the blood-total cholesterol, HDL (a subset called "good cholesterol") and LDL ("bad cholesterol") and triglycerides have been used for years to predict the risk of heart disease in men. Higher cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, and/or low HDL all are associated with increased risk of heart diseases in men.

2006-09-20 Eating soy protein benefits the heart

Though some consumers may try soy products here and there, it takes a sustained effort to eat enough to reach the beneficial daily intake. This is especially true for those who have elevated cholesterol levels. "Dietary interventions that can lower cholesterol are important tools for physicians," says Antonio Gotto, M. D. , professor of medicine at Cornell University, "particularly since diet is usually prescribed before medication and is continued after drug therapy is begun. " He emphasizes that in order to succeed, such diets must have enough variety that patients dont get bored and lapse back into old eating habits. He says his experience with patients suggests that its important to learn how to "sneak" soy into the diet painlessly.

2006-03-26 SitNews - Column: Side Effects are killing me! By Rob Holston

Pfizer will tell you in their advertisement for Lipitor that their claimed results include diet and exercise. They dont tell you what kind of diet or how much and what type of exercise can be most effective in addressing high cholesterol but give the advice to ask your doctor if Lipitor is right for you. Because most American doctors have less than a three hour seminar equivalent in either nutritional or exercise physiology education, there is a dim chance that they are going to recommend anything more than general term advice of "have a low-fat diet and dont forget to exercise". A typical U. S. doctor will feel comfortable in regurgitating the fast facts from the last Pfizer sales rep as they write out the prescription and leave it at that. To

2006-06-20 Breaking News: Niaspan(R) Combined with Low/Moderate Dosed Statin Achieves Better Total Lipid Control vs. Higher Dose Statin Monotherapy or Zocor(R)/Zetia(R)

Available since 1997, Niaspan is the only FDA-approved, once-daily extended-release prescription formulation of niacin for treating abnormal cholesterol levels. Niaspan is indicated as an adjunct to diet when the response to a diet restricted in saturated fat and cholesterol and other nonpharmacologic measures alone has been inadequate, to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-C, Apo B, and triglyceride levels, and to increase HDL-C in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. In patients with a history of myocardial infarction and hypercholesterolemia, niacin is indicated to reduce the risk of recurrent non-fatal myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease and hypercholesterolemia. Niacin, in combination with a bile acid binding resin, is indicated to slow progression or promote regression of

2006-03-24 Hispanic PR Wire - First-Ever Large-Scale Prospective Study in Hispanic Patients with Elevated Cholesterol Demonstrates Significant Cholesterol Reductions with CRESTOR(R)

CRESTOR (rosuvastatin calcium) is a once-daily prescription medication for use as an adjunct to diet in the treatment of various lipid disorders including primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia and isolated hypertriglyceridemia. It is a member of the statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) class of drug therapy. CRESTOR has not been determined to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, or strokes. For patients with hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, the usual recommended starting dose of CRESTOR is 10 mg. However, initiation of therapy with 5 mg once daily should be considered for patients requiring less aggressive LDL-C reductions or who have predisposing factors for myopathy, and for special populations such as patients taking cyclosporine, Asian patients, and patients with severe renal insufficiency.
