2010-03-14 Book Review: The "I" Diet by Susan B. Roberts and Betty Kelly Sargent Booster Shots Los Angeles Times

Roberts book, written with Betty Kelly Sargent, addresses these variables to help dieters shed pounds and develop a healthier relationship to food. Shes tested her plan on volunteers in her Tufts weight-loss lab and others. She promises that her program drops weight faster with less hunger than other plans, eliminates dieting plateaus and cuts cravings -- and will result in permanent weight control.

The I Diet" is a diet book with a difference. Like many other books in the weight-loss genre, it features eating plans, nutritional advice and recipes. But the new paperback -- previously published in 2008 as "The Instinct Diet" and updated with new material -- offers something more: practical strategies for changing eating habits.

A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says moms-to-be who eat a high-fat, low-carb diet are more likely to have sons, while a low-fat, high-carb diet more often results in daughters. Scientists are still looking for the reason behind this.

While youre considering your diet, pregnant women may also want to consider what they watch. Researchers from Nagasaki University in Japan discovered that unborn babies respond to their mothers mood while watching movies and become still if the film is sad, lively if its happy. Its suspected that the rush of hormones triggered by an emotional film is transmitted to the fetus:

Cycling your carbohydrates: Lower your carbohydrates on the days you dont do anything. Avoid carbohydrates at night time (or evening unless you are working out). So you could say that Im an advocate of moderate to low carb diet. Carbohydrates isnt bad however, it is the main reason for obesity in my opinion.

Nutrition is 80 pct. of the game: Never skip breakfast, always have protein when you are eating carbs. Drink plenty of water throughout the day (boosts metabolism by 30 percent). Eat frequently (watch your meal portions you shouldnt feel stuffed) to stabilize glucose and avoid slowing your metabolism.

2010-03-11 Avoid Carbs Avoid Fats Which is it - Kare about Health

Theoretically, in order to maintain weight loss if you do lose weight, you need to continue the program. But a low-carb diet doesnt appear to be easier to maintain than any other diet. Studies comparing low-carb diets and low-fat diets found that after a year, people dropped out of both diets at similar rates. This suggests that the low-carb diet, like so many diets, is no easier to stick to long term.

When your diet is rich in complex carbohydrates, more of the T4 gets converted to T3. When your diet is low in carbs, more of the T4 is converted in to reverse T3. The same thing happens during periods of starvation or low-calorie dieting. This is presumably the bodys way of guarding its fat reserves. When not much food is coming in, the body conserves fat and down-regulates production of T3, the fat-burning hormone. Remember, fat burns in the presence of oxygen which requires some breakdown of carbohydrates.

2010-03-09 Readers weigh in on low-carb meal plans The Coloradoan

A few weeks ago, I reported on a study that reviewed the efficacy of low carbohydrate/high fat diets as compared to the more traditional high carbohydrate/low fat diets. This was an impressive review of the weight loss literature and the authors concluded that the low carb diets were superior overall.

The research, which was a review of many low carb diets, seemed to confuse some people. This was not a single study examining the efficacy of one low carb diet. All of the studies did de-emphasize carbohydrates, but in varying percentages.

Some can rapidly lose weight with a low-carb diet and others will only lose a couple of pounds. This is due to a persons genetic makeup and has nothing to do with how strict the diet plan is. The same applies for a low-fat diet plan.

This special DNA test evaluates the presence of three different genes that are needed to metabolize fat and carbohydrates. The presence or lack of will help doctors determine which diets will work for each individual.

2010-03-07 On Your Side: Genetic Test Could Reveal Best Diet for You ABC 7 News

Researchers based their findings on the genetic makeup of participants in a previous Stanford University study that looked at low-fat and low-carb diets and weight loss.

Now a new test using a cheek swab to collect DNA can reveal whether a low-fat, low-carb, or combination diet would work best for your genetic makeup.

A study of about 140 overweight or obese women found those on a diet that matched their genetic makeup lost about five percent of their body weight. Thats compared to a two-percent body weight loss when the diet didnt match their genetic makeup.

2010-03-05 Gene test claims to show what diet works best

The company then hired Stanford researchers to do a validation study of its usd. 149 test, using people who took part in diet research that was published in 2007. That study tested four diets - Atkins (ultra-low-carb), the Zone (low-carb), Ornish (very low-fat) or a low-fat diet following the federal Food Pyramid.

About one-third of the original participants, 138 women, sent cheek swabs with their DNA to Interleukin, which tagged them as "low-carb appropriate" or "low-fat appropriate. "

2010-03-04 Low-Fat Diet Works Better Than Low-Carb in Long Run and laquo; eFitnessNow

In a recent issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, the low-fat diet wins over the low-carb diet. This is because more low-carb dieters gained the weight back than the low-fat dieters even though the weight is lost faster in a low-carb diet. A three-year research study was done with 132 obese persons. The low-carb dieters ate less than 30gm/day of carbs with no restrictions on the caloric intake. The low-fat dieters had an intake of 500 kcal/day with less than 30 pct. of it from fat.
