Low Carb Living Magazine. The Low Carb Diet

Low carb diet low carb living scrn

As far as blood pressure goes, its been our experience that people who are going to respond to a low carb diet do so very quickly--ie see their blood pressure drop within the first couple of weeks. There are other reasons for high blood pressure than insulin resistance and obesity and these other causes dont respond to a low carb diet as well. One of the reasons we decided to undertake the Low Carb CookwoRx show was to try to teach people how important what they eat is, not just how much they eat. A high quality whole food low carb diet is, to our way of thinking, the ideal one for most everybody. In the case of Lauras problem, there may be other factors. medications, hormones, stress, etc interfering with the loss.

In each episode, the Eades will blend their passion for cooking, love of great food and unrivaled expertise in the fields of nutrition and weight loss in a dynamic 30-minute PBS program that begins distribution this April.

LowCarb Living Magazine had the chance to talk with the Eades, both members of our Editorial Advisory Board, about the new show and how it dovetails perfectly with their previous work.

LCLmag. Why go the route of a cooking show Why not do something more medical given your backgrounds and extensive knowledge

Eades. There is no stronger medicine than the right kind of food to heal a dysfunctional metabolism. We spent twenty years in the clinic treating patients hands-on. After twenty years of telling people what to eat, we decided it was time to show them how to do it.

And we believe that the road to success on a low carb diet (or really any diet, for that matter) goes right through the kitchen. You cant really fully adopt a change in nutritional lifestyle until you embrace cooking and eating that way day to day. We still speak and lecture on medical topics and do have a couple of more medical TV ideas simmering on the back burner. So stay tuned.

LCLmag. What can viewers expect Will the recipes be easy for people to do, even if theyre not gourmet cooks

Eades. Are you kidding me These are our own recipes developed by little old us. were doing all the cooking on the show. and although we know a fair amount about food, especially low carb food, love to eat, and love to cook, were certainly not professional chefs or even really gourmet cooks. The recipes are easy to understand, easy to do with very little practice, and in most cases, something even novice cooks can jump right into. Viewers will get not only recipe information and demonstration but a wealth of interesting food and nutrition related facts and tidbits about why to eat specific foods for good health.

LCLmag. Will we need lots of specialty ingredients to make your recipes

Eades. Just about everything we use is readily available in most grocery stores (or could be gotten by any grocery store for the asking) or easy to get on-line. There are one or two items that wed consider specialty items. theyre relatively inexpensive, last a long time, and are available in low-carb stores and on-line as well.

LCL. Many people (even other low-carb diet books) say that theres too much saturated fat in the Atkins plan. How do you answer that

CH. On the Atkins Nutritional Approach, you individualize your own meal planning to include the whole foods you enjoy. Atkins is not necessarily high in saturated fat. When you eat a variety whole foods you naturally get a balance of saturated fat, monounsatuarted fats and polyunsaturated fats. It all depends on what foods you choose to include. Those who have a preference for foods like bacon and butter may be eating a higher saturated fat percentage than those who enjoy fish and chicken.

However, a diet higher in saturated fat is not of concern since there is no research that shows that saturated fat effects heart health in a controlled carbohydrate setting. The only research that shows a link between saturated fat and heart disease is in a mixed diet setting, where carbs are central to meal planning. Other diet plans such as South Beach claims to be lower in fat, however independent menu analysis shows that the total fat percentage is the same (Atkins is higher in mono, while SB is higher in poly).

Halloween can be pretty scary for those trying to stick to a low-carb diet. While the thought of holding out against the evils of candy corn, marshmallow pumpkins, and mini-chocolate bars can be frightening, you dont need to tie garlic around your neck to protect yourself from over-doing it this Halloween. Instead, try these tricks

Mary Dan Eades, M.D. and Michael Eades, M.D. - Dr. Michael R. Eades and Dr. Mary Dan Eades have been recognized throughout the world for their pioneering efforts in the field of metabolic medicine. During the course of their 15-year-plus joint careers, the Eades have personally treated thousands of overweight and unhealthy patients. The success of their private practice led to their co-authoring the breakthrough bestseller Protein Power in 1995. Since then, the couple has published four other successful books, including The Protein Power Lifeplan and The 30-Day Low-Carb Diet Solution.

Should you follow the Atkins diet. The South Beach diet. A different low-carb regimen.

It doesnt matter, says the premiere issue of LowCarb Living, which debuts on newsstands January 20th. Americas first magazine created for the 35 million adults now actively participating in this enormously popular health movement, LowCarb Living says the plan you choose matters less than why you chose it.

Are you choosing this eating style because youve heard you can lose weight quickly without exercise and while eating all the bacon and sausage you want Or are you ready to commit to changing your eating habits for a lifetime of good health asks LowCarb Living in a feature piece entitled Make The Commitment.

The cover story, Atkins vs. South Beach sets out the differences between the two leading low-carb diet regimens in detail. The authors point out that most of the myths about these diets come from people who have never actually read the books or followed the diets in them.

Patrick Lenow, Director of Communications for IHOP, confirmed for LowCarb Living Magazine that IHOPs popular omelets do indeed contain what he characterized as a splash of pancake batter, enough to add roughly six grams of carbohydrates to the omelet. While this might not seem like a big deal to those who dont need or want to watch their carbs, for someone following the first phases of a low-carb diet such as the Atkins Diet, where carbohydrate intake might be restricted to 30 grams per day or less, that six grams is meaningful. Although it is a small amount, it may very well matter to someone who is insulin resistant or who is following a carb-restricted plan for weight-loss, diabetes or other health reasons, says Ann Kulze, M.D., the author of Dr. Anns 10-Step Diet. A Simple Plan for Permanent Weight Loss and Lifelong Vitality, who helped develop Ruby Tuesdays Smart Eating Menu. Of even greater concern, however, is the fact that there are definitely individuals who are gluten-sensitive, who could have adverse effects from just a small amount of gluten.

Drs. Eades. Many women who suffer from PCOS (polycistic ovarian syndrome) have high testosterone levels, and often struggle with weight. They generally do very well on a low carb diet.

Audience Question. On the veggies, what about some of the alternative oils to my beloved olive oil were seeing walnut, sesame, etc. Can you mix them Whats in your kitchen

Drs. Eades. In our pantry, youll find coconut oil for baking and saute, of course, olive oil of several types, sesame oil to give an Asian flair to foods, walnut oil for salad dressings or aioli, and avocado and macadamia nut oils also for salads. All are tasty and differ in fatty acid make up and their ability to withstand heat.

Audience Question. I have some ...confusion, I guess, about some of the new LC products like wheat protein isolate, polydextrose.

Drs. Eades. Polydextrose is a complex chain of glucose molecules, similar to starch. There is some question about how absorbable it is for the human gut. So its hard to say how many effective carbs it contributes. It is synthesized from glucose and about 10pct. sorbitol (theres the tummy bothering part). Its used to improve mouth feel of foods and to absorb water.

Drs. Eades. Were not really familiar with Wheat protein isolate . If its what was once called distillers grain its the protein portion of wheat that is left over after liquor is made.

Audience Question. My husband is 62 - 156 pounds - age 46 and would like to gain weight without adding alot of carbs. If he goes under 100 carbs/day, he loses. Any suggestions on supplementation or weight gain products that may help him gain without adding bad carbs. Hes the guy you love to hate as he can eat alot without gaining weight.

Drs. Eades. Yes, hes Metabolically Gifted and Talented.

Drs. Eades. To gain weight, we would recommend eating more calories from lower carb foods, such as olives, avocados, cheese, nuts, nut butters, (all the things you have to cut down on if youre not losing on a low carb diet).
