The Atkins Diet Revolution | | The Atkins Diet Unlike the Zone diet which states specific proportions of carbohydrate, protein and fat (40pct.-30pct.-30pct.), the Atkins diet simply limits carbohydrate intake to between 20 and 60 grams per day. Elevated levels of protein and fat consumption are both encouraged. The Atkins diet is similar to other low carb diets in that it splits the diet into phases which the dieter will adhere to as they progress through the diet. The Atkins phases are summarized as follows. Atkins Diet Phase 1 - Induction This lasts for 14 days (2 weeks). This phase of Atkins is designed to induce a state of ketosis. This means that the body is producing ketones from fat, to be used as a fuel source instead of carbohydrates. Followers of the Atkins diet will use Ketostix strips (available from a chemist or health store) to detect when their body is in a state of Ketosis. When the body is in this state, weight loss is very rapid. In this stage carbohydrates are restricted to no more than 20 grams a day. All fruit is off the menu, as well as the majority of carbohydrate containing vegetables. Atkins Diet Phase 2 - Ongoing Weight Loss In this phase the dieter will slowly increase their consumption of carbohydrates, whilst monitoring the rate at which theyre still losing weight. Typically the increase will stretch to about 40 to 50 grams of carbohydrate a day. The dieter is encouraged to monitor how their body is reacting to the diet as they increase the levels of carbohydrates. The amount of carbohydrates consumed at this stage of the Atkins diet have increased, and as such, the food options are more varied than in the first phase. Atkins Diet Phase 3 - Pre-Maintenance Diet The dieter will enter this phase of the Atkins diet when they are 5 to 10 pounds away from their target weight. Again carbohydrates are being increased to a level called the Critical Carbohydrate Level for Maintenance which is determined whilst in Atkins Phase 2. In this phase, weight loss is slowed right down in preparation for the final phase. Less than 1 pound of weight per week is being lost at the end of this phase. Atkins Diet Phase 4 - Maintenance Diet This phase of Atkins aims to keep the dieter at their target weight for the rest of their life. The dieter will keep carbohydrate intake at a level that they have now learnt will maintain their target weight. Many people find that by increasing the levels of protein in their diet, they experience lesser craving for food throughout the day. Indeed people often favor the Atkins diet because the food options are vast compared to more traditional low calorie diets. Its clear that the Atkins diet has worked for so many people. However, I personally prefer diets that are more selective over what types of carbohydrates are consumed, such as the South Beach Diet. The Atkins diet has received a bad rap as it encourages dieters to increase their consumption of animal products including red meats which contain saturated fats. These fats can increase the risk of heart disease and circulatory problems, amongst other things. In comparison to Atkins, diets such as the Zone diet and the South Beach Diet opt for the good carbs (complex carbohydrates) and the good fats (unsaturated). The Atkins, unlike many other low carb diets, quite heavily restricts what can and cant be eaten - especially in terms of fruit and veg. The Atkins diet therefore recommends the use of dietary nutritional supplements in an attempt to combat this problem as well as aiding the dietary process. Due to the focus on animal products, which normally only contain minute amounts of carbohydrate, vegetarians may find the Atkins diet hard to follow.
Low GI Diet | | A brief overview of the low GI diet.
What is the Low GI Diet The Low GI Diet has come to the forefront of the media surrounding weightloss in recent times. In some respects the GI diet has come off the back of more traditional low carb diets that are now familiar with a lot of people. However, there is now a shift in thinking that concentrates on the different types of carbohydrate rather than simply making the blanket statement that the dieter should banish all carbs from their diet. The low GI diet embodies this approach to low carb dieting. GI Diet GI Diet is based around the Glycemic Index, hence the GI acronym. So what is the Glycemic Index and how is it used to determine different types of carbohydrate The Glycemic Index was developed by Dr David Jenkins as a means of finding foods suitable for diabetics. The index is a measure of how fast after eating a food glucose gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Foods high on the glycemic index contain carbohydrates that are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and obviously, foods with low GI values take relatively longer to release sugars into the bloodstream. The Glycemic Index uses a scale from 0 to 100. As you move up the scale, towards 100, the quicker the food source will elevate your blood sugar levels. At the top of the scale (100) is normally pure glucose. Low GI Diet and Weight Loss The Low GI Diet has the dieter select foods that are low on the glycemic index. The idea behind the Low GI diet is that the slower the carbohydrates are made available in the bloodstream the less they will be used as a source of energy by the body. Eating low GI foods will also have a stabilizing effect on the blood sugar levels of the dieter. This is a key point for anyone trying to lose weight, as the sugar highs associated with foods high on the GI scale will leave you lacking energy when you enter a trough, and so to compensate, you will eat more to maintain the energy levels experienced when at the peak of the sugar high. This constant snacking on refined foods is obviously damaging. Low GI Diet Foods Its relatively easy to select foods suitable for low GI dieting, as all the dieter needs to do is aim for foods that are low on the GI scale. These will typically be foods that are less processed and refined. For instance, wholemeal bread is lower on the GI scale than white bread. The GI scale is quite extensive, and so you will normally find it in the many books now available on the Low GI Diet.

Ketosis and bad breath | | Unfortunately, while we try and get our body in shape on a low carb diet, our breath and general body odour is likely to suffer big time. This is due to the body producing molecules refered to as ketones. Theyre used to fuel parts of the body that would normally be fuelled by simple carbohydrates, such as glucose. As you probably know, ketones can be a problem for our breath, our general body odor and lastly for anyone that dares to venture too close. What can be done about it If youre following one of the better known low carb diet plans, theres no getting away from the fact that at some stage youre going to be producing ketones. You cant stop the ketones from being produced but you can attempt to neutralize the bad smell. Ive found that mint is the most effective. Use mint mouth spray. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Unfortunately though, no amount of brushing, deodorant or mouth sprays will really help for any length of time. Why Because these are external hygiene measures, and the real problem is that ketones are produced internally.
Time to freshen up, and kick that bad breath. Thankfully, therere now some great products coming on the market that can help us all to freshen up. Remember what I was saying about ketones originating from the inside Body Mint tablets have made big news recently on CNN, NBC and CBS because they work from the inside-out to continuously reduce bad breath, underarm and foot odors. They provide a really simple solution to fight bad breath and body odour from head to toe. In addition to the great news reviews, people that have already tried this have had huge success in eliminating their bad breath and body odor. The other great thing about Body Mint is that its completely natural and, importantly, its compatible with any low carb diet. Body Mint tablets are made from a highly specialized, derivative of chlorophyll. Body Mints unique formulation process give it the uncommon power to reduce unpleasant body odors from multiple sources, such as breath, underarm and foot odor.

Low Carb Desserts | | Low carb desserts are becoming more readily available for the low carber as the industry strives to cater for our low carb taste buds. Even savory food lovers, like myself, sometimes just want something sweet tasting for a bit of variety or contrast, if nothing else. It seems just plain wrong not to have some sort of tasty cake etc when celebrating someones birthday or as a self awarded gift for a hard day at the office. Theres no reason why these cant be low carb desserts. Low carb desserts are an often a tragically overlooked part of most low carb plans. If you do have a sweet tooth, rest assured that being on a low carb diet doesnt mean desserts are off the menu for good. Low carb desserts do exist and are awaiting your approval. Sugar Free Low Carb Desserts When thinking about low carb desserts, we really have to be aware of refined flours and sugar. Both of these can be cut out completely, or simply reduced to make some great low carb desserts. Remember that you are allowed a bit of a treat and depending on the diet phase youre in, you dont need to follow the restrictions down to the last letter. Just be sensible. Instead of using pure sugar, natural sweeteners are often used. Some artificial sweeteners may interfere with your low carb diet and therefore they should be used sparingly in your low carb desserts.
The South Beach Diet | | The South Beach Diet is perhaps one of the more fashionable diets in existence today. This is largely due to the huge amounts of money the people behind the South Beach Diet have poured into promoting it. In fact, it is probably the first low carb diet (cough splutter - more on this later) to become more popular than, the diet that seemed to start it all, Atkins. However, this is not the only reason the South Beach Diet is so big. The simple fact is, that it has worked well for so many people and in my opinion it is one of the more healthy diets around. So then, what about this low carb diet lark Is it a low carb diet or isnt it Well, many people say that this is NOT a low carb diet and well - theyre kind of right. However, I would say that the South Beach Diet could be seen as a low carb diet in some respects. Firstly as we shall see, the diet is split into three stages, the first stage of which can only be described as low carb. Secondly, the diet highlights the importance of cutting back on particular types of carbohydrate, so you will still be reducing the intake of carbohydrates that fall into this category.

Are Low Carb Diets The Best Way To Lose Body Fat. | | These days, the carbohydrate issue seems to be the burning question on the minds of nearly everyone who is interested in getting leaner. Not a single week goes by that I dont receive an e-mail with a question about the low carb/high protein diet. Last week I got this one. Dear Tom, Are you a proponent of the low-carb diet for bodybuilders Although this is hotly debated, I dont know many ripped bodybuilders that have not tried such a diet. Thanks. Its no wonder why theres such a buzz about these diets. everywhere you look lately there are low carb bars, low carb drinks, low carb meal replacements, low carb frozen dinners and so on. In the bookstores, The Atkins diet, Protein Power and Sugar-Busters have all been best sellers. Even though there has been a huge resurgence in the interest in low carb/high protein diets, the low carb vs. high carb issue is still the subject of much controversy. For every low carb guru who says that low carbs are the ultimate diet, there is a high carb guru with the opposite opinion. This has caused a lot of people a lot of confusion. So whats the deal Is the low carb/high protein diet the best way for bodybuilders to get ripped or just another fad From a bodybuilding standpoint, the answer is an unequivocal yes. reducing carbohydrates really works. Most bodybuilders cant get that ripped look without some degree of carb restriction. Almost every bodybuilder or fitness competitor Ive ever met uses some version of the low carb diet when getting ready for competition. The problem is, most people fail to take into account their goals and their unique body type, so they follow the advice of the latest low-carb guru and take the carb restriction too far. Zero carb or close to zero carb diets are in my opinion, TOTAL INSANITY. The other extreme. the high carb, very low fat diet, isnt the best approach for bodybuilders either. These diets (60-70pct. carb, 20-30pct. protein and 10pct. or less fat) were trendy with bodybuilders for a while, especially back in the 80s and early 90s (Remember Nathan Pritkin, Dean Ornish and Robert Haas), but their popularity quickly faded. Those who tried it discovered that it wasnt nearly as effective as the low to moderate carb, high protein diet. Why does dropping your carbs help you lose more fat There are several reasons, but to avoid getting into a complicated discussion of nutritional biochemistry, lets just say that eating less carbs forces your body to burn fat for fuel instead of sugar. Reducing carbs and increasing protein accelerates fat loss by controlling your insulin and blood sugar more effectively. The high protein in these diets also speeds up your metabolism because of the thermic effect of protein food. It also helps eliminate water retention, giving you the hard and dry look you need onstage to win contests.
In my opinion, a moderate carb diet, with slight carb restriction (especially at night) is the most effective (and most sane) way for bodybuilders to get ripped. For example, my contest diet is about 175 -200 grams of carbs with most of the carbs eaten early in the day. Every 4th day, I have a high carb day (350 grams) to replenish my depleted glycogen stores. By contrast, my off-season diet is 350 - 450 grams of carbs. With 175 - 200 grams of carbs, that is just enough fuel to provide the energy I needed to train hard and to prevent me from losing muscle. Would dropping carbs even further to 30 or 50 grams a day (like many fad diets recommend) get you more ripped or get you ripped faster Maybe. But the problem is, without carbs, youll have no energy to train hard. Sure, tuna fish and water will get you ripped alright, but if your workouts suffer because your diet is killing you, you arent going to look or feel your best. Another big problem caused by very low carb diets is loss of lean body mass. The lower you drop your carbs, the more likely you are to lose muscle along with the fat. A third problem with very low carb diets is the rebound effect. The lower you drop your carbs, the faster you will rebound and gain the fat back when you add the carbs back in. I swear Ive seen guys blow up 30-40 lbs in a matter of DAYS after their contest because they went on a carbohydrate and fat binge after a four-month zero carb diet. It wasnt a pretty sight. When I experimented with a very low carb diet, (about 40-70 grams a day), I lost huge amounts of lean body mass and looked very flat and stringy. I was also one irritable, grouchy SOB. My friends nicknamed me fog boy because (sez them) I stumbled around in a fog-like daze. One friend who hadnt seen me since the previous year when I was a bulked up and carbed up 208 lbs, saw me 48 lbs lighter after the low carb diet (yes, 160 scrawny pounds) and he said, holy sh** Tom, what happened to you Youre HALF the man you were last year. That was the last time I ever tried an extremely low carb diet.
Nutrition is a highly individual issue. Some people cant seem to lose weight unless they reduce their carbohydrate intake. Other people can eat bagels and pasta all day long and they have six pack abs. How many carbs you eat therefore, depends on your body type. Are you an endormorph or an ectomorph Do you have a fast metabolism or a slow metabolism Are you naturally lean or naturally heavy Depending on your genetics, you might thrive on high carbs or you might need a high protein, low carb diet to get results. But beware. even if you think you are the carb sensitive, slow-metabolism type, the middle path (moderate carb restiction) is the most sensible way to go. The only way to determine how many grams of carbs is right for YOU is to experiment until you find your critical level. If you start dropping body fat rapidly at 200 grams a day, then why on earth would you subject yourself to the torture of going even lower and doing one of those 30-40 grams a day ketogenic diets Why kill yourself Remember, there is no single diet that works for everyone. There are certain universal nutritional laws that apply to everyone, but be very careful of gurus who use the words always and never or who make sweeping statements like carbohydrates make you fat. If you want to get ripped, you should also pick the type of carbs you eat carefully - its not just the quantity, its the quality. In addition to moderating total daily carb intake, I also recommend getting off ALL processed carbs including bread, crackers, pretzels, pasta, bagels and switching only to natural, unprocessed carbs like vegetables, oatmeal, yams, rice, potatoes, etc. That single change will go a long way in helping you get leaner (and healthier too.) The bottom line is that its not correct to say, carbs are fattening, but there IS some truth to the assertion that a low carb diet will get you leaner compared to a high carb diet you just have to approach it in a sensible and individualized way. As in most areas of your life, going to the extreme with your diet will usually do you more harm than good.

Tracking Your Low Carb Diet | | On any low carb diet, it is essential that you keep track of your progress, your carb intake and your weight to ensure success. Only then can you fine tune your diet to your personal needs and achieve optimum results. Sadly, however, I actually believe this is one of the most common reasons why so many low carbers fail in their quest to lose enough weight, and then keep it off.
Low Carb Vegetarian Diet | | Low Carb Dieters. Want a Break from the Meat Make It Veggie. At first, your low carb diet seemed like the best dream youd ever had. A dietary expert was actually telling you to eat as much meat, eggs, and cheese as you possibly wanted. You could go to any restaurant, order the biggest slab of beef on the menu and since you werent eating bread or potatoes with meatyou could still claim you were watching your waistline when offered dessert. But, now that the low carb honeymoon is over, you might be finding that the thought of another pork chop, omelet, or hunk of cheese makes you sick to your stomach. If you fit this description, there is a way to keep your carbs low, but your spirits high. Instead of a steak for your next breakfast, lunch, and dinner, why dont you try a low carb vegetarian dish Dont worry you dont need a special ID card to eat vegetarian foods, nor do you need to wear sandals and burn incense. In fact, with nuts, fruits, and vegetables, you eat vegetarian foods all the time. But, if youre ready to skip steak once in a while, its time to replace some of your meat entrees with vegetarian options. And, believe it or not, its easier than you might think to whip up a low carb vegetarian dish. The easiest way to take your low carb diet on a vegetarian trip is by using meat substitutes. Meat substitutes taste, feel, and even smell like the real deal. When you simply substitute these faux meats in any of your meat-based recipes, youll have to check the package twice to make sure it really says Vegetarian on the label. From tofu to tempeh, seitan to TVP, there are just about as many meat substitutes as actual meats on the market today. You can have vegetarian ribs, shrimp, steak, chicken, turkey, salmon, and just about any other meat you can think of.
Low Carb Diets | | Your quick guide to the weight loss frenzy that is the Low Carb Diet Its little surprise that people are searching harder than ever for new and easy ways to shed a few pounds. Well, lets face it - were talking more than a few pounds here. In fact 31pct. of Americans are considered overweight, compared with only 23pct. in 2004. Low carb diets are all over the place at the moment and the chances are that youve stumbled upon this article via one of the many low carb diet resources on the internet. This article aims to provide you with a balanced guide to the concept of the low carb diet and what it can do for you.
Low carb diets fuss over carbohydrates, what are they
Low carb diets focus on energy usage and in particular controlling levels of energy obtained and released from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the bodys primary source of energy. Carbohydrates fall into two groups. simple carbohydrates, such as common sugars present in honeys and syrups. Then we have complex carbohydrates, which are present in whole grain breads etc. Generally, simple carbohydrates get absorbed into the bodys bloodstream at a faster rate than complex carbohydrates. They are a quick and accessible source of energy. However an exception is fructose, a sugar and simple carbohydrate, which is actually released into the bloodstream at a very slow rate, comparable to many complex carbs. Complex carbohydrates are often referred to as slow release carbohydrates. Low carb diets are, in the main, concerned with reducing the simple quick release carbohydrates.
Low Carb Diet Concept
Naturally, the body will use simple carbohydrates such as sugars mentioned above as a main energy source. The aim of a low carb diet is to condition the body to start using fat as a primary source of energy instead of carbohydrates. Additionally, a low carb diet will rid the body of a lot of stored water. Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscle tissues as Glycogen. Chemically speaking (dont get scared.), one molecule of glycogen requires three molecules of water for storage. So, as the body naturally stores carbohydrates as a source of energy reserve, it is also storing a lot of water. When you start a low carb diet, your body will begin to use up your carbohydrate reserves and release with it all that associated water. As a result of this, weight loss in the first instance of a low carb diet is rapid. In the first week of a low carb diet, its quite easy to lose at least four pounds. Thirdly, a lot of calories actually come from carbohydrates. Imagine the effect of cutting out cake and ice-cream etc. So even though the emphasis is placed on the carbs, a low carb diet is often a low calorie diet as well, just by its very nature.
The down side to the low carb diet
Ok. So, we know the upside of the low carb diet is that youre likely to lose weight very quickly. But what about the downsides Well, we did say this was going to be a balanced look at low carb diets after all. Some of the better known low carb diets encourage the dieter to ingest greater levels of fat. There often isnt any differentiation made between the types of fat. saturated and unsaturated. The American Heart Association has long had health concerns about low carb diets such as Atkins because the dieter is encouraged to eat more animal produce which, in the case of steak for example, is high in saturated animal fats. The effect on the heart must be taken into consideration if youre considering a low carb diet. Not all parts of the body can use fat as an energy source. The brain for example uses glucose - a sugar that is avoided on a low carb diet. Ketones are produced to fuel these parts of the body. If the low carb diet cuts out too many carbs, the body will enter a state of ketosis. The down side here is that ketones will make your breath smell. On a low carb diet muscle tissue may decrease as described above. Exercise must be taken to reduce muscle wastage. Muscle tissue is a major factor in metabolism and burning calories. A low carb diet can decrease the amount of muscle tissue and therefore actually make it harder to burn fat. A balanced diet is paramount to good health. A given low carb diet may not always be that well balanced. For example, fruit is a good source of essential nutrients. However a low carb diet may require that the intake of fruit be reduced. A low carb diet may also require a higher level of protein intake. This can put a strain on your kidneys.
Should you even be considering a low carb diet then
Despite some of the less attractive concerns mentioned above, the fact remains that the low carb diet concept is working well for many many people. Cutting out carbs completely could never be considered a balance diet. However, its not disputed that reducing your carbohydrate intake can be beneficial to a weight loss diet. Its the extent to which you do this that should be thought about and researched with great care. Its important to read around and explore the low carb diet options before committing yourself. Look out for reviews of the most common low carb diets here on Carbohydrate-Counter coming soon.
This article is in no way meant as a source of medical advice. As always, you should never consider embarking on a low carb diet without consulting your doctor first.
