Back in February of 1995 I had gained a lot of weight and had finally weighed in at 201 pounds. I finally made my mind up that I had to do something. So I started a 1200 calorie a day diet making sure to include all basic food groups. and I started a walking exercise program. I remember when I first started walking it took me 30 - 35 minutes to walk a mile. Of course carrying all that weight and not being active it was slow going at first. As time went by and the weight starting coming off I got more energy where I could start walking more in less time. By the end of June of 1995 I had lost 70 pounds and a whole lot of dress sizes. I was walking 7 miles a day in 45 minutes. On weekends I would walk 14 miles a day. I felt so good about how I looked and how I felt. After having kept the weight off for 2 years especially with the exercise I developed female problems and ended up having surgery. Let me tell you, those who are truly committed to Diet andamp. Exercise you can not go past the 3 day mark without excercise without it getting harder and harder to get back into your routine. I couldnt do anything for 6 weeks after surgery and I really had lost my momentum. I started having depression and mood swings after my surgery and was put on some anti-depressants that really put some pounds on me. I would try to lose the weight but then my plan would get interuptted. I would go up and down on the weight. With my work schedule and all my activities I got involved in there was just no time to exercise. Needless to say I ended up weighing 225 pounds. I didnt like the way I felt or looked. Trying to diet at my age with everything else going in my life right now was just to stressful for me.

Tamara Amend | | I always knew that I wanted to compete in this sport and now I have the opportunity to tell my story. Hello, my name is Tamara Amend, and here is my journey as a figure competitor over the past seven months. It all started one weekend in February when I went to a mini camp in Columbus, Ohio, held by trainer Mike Davies. Three intense days which included one to two body parts chest, shoulders, biceps, triceps and legs a day, boot camp, posing, and a one on one with coach Mike Davies, to see if I have what it takes to compete in this sport. Three months away from my first figure show, what was I getting myself into. I didnt realize what hard work and determination really meant until I continued to push myself to be successful in this sport. I knew to do well in this sport I would need guidance. So I decided to drive up to Columbus two times a week in order to improve. In the process I struggled with the diet. Coach Mike pulled me aside and he said, Tamara do you want to fail or succeed. I said, I want to succeed. He said, Stop screwing up the diet. It works. He was right. Once I put my mind to it the diet wasnt that bad after all. Just to have someone encourage you to be your best is unexplainable. If I learned anything over the past seven months its that defeat is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent. Be yourself and have lots of fun. As an athlete with any kind of success, be confident but humble at the same time.

Since the 1998 Northern Kentucky Championship is a contest designed for first time competitors or those peaking for a later show, lets make this your first show of the year. If you count backwards from March 21, youll find that 16 weeks out is the weekend following Thanksgiving, so lets start your diet December 1. In this article we are going to provide you with the actual diets that successful competitors followed as they prepared for the Northern Kentucky Championship. Phase 1. 16 weeks out to 8 weeks out Diet. Lets begin by taking a few things for granted. First, you have been training properly and have already started regulating your diet by eliminating junk foods, sugar, bread, high carbohydrate drinks, regular soft drinks and are cutting down on high lactose milk products. Start reading labels and if there is more than 5 grams of sugar per serving drop it from your diet. With sixteen weeks to go, its time to start seriously. The goal is to maintain bodyweight, unless you are way out of shape, but to slowly lose bodyfat while actually adding lean tissue from your training, improved diet and supplements. One of the mistakes we see most often is a competitor makes an instant calorie drop when he starts his diet. This causes the loss of a lot of muscle tissue right at the outset of the diet. Your goal is to add calories and nutrient density through your diet and supplements at the sixteen weeks out point. Diets Dont Work | | Diets Dont Work. By Chad Tackett Many Americans view a healthy lifestyle as something difficult to attain--and something thats not much fun. Traditional diets have taught us that to lose weight, we must count calories, keep track of everything we eat, and deprive ourselves by limiting the amount--and kinds--of foods we eat. Diets tell us exactly what and how much food to eat, regardless of our preferences and individual relationships with hunger and satiety. Dieting can help us lose weight fat, muscle, and water in the short term but is so unnatural and so unrealistic that it can never become a lifestyle that we can live with, let alone enjoy. While very few diets teach healthy low-fat shopping, cooking, and dining-out strategies, many offer unrealistic recommendations and encourage health-threatening restrictions. Even more important, diets dont teach us the safest, most effective ways to exercise. they dont teach us how to deal with our cravings and our desires, or how to attend to our feelings of hunger and fullness. Eventually, we become tired of the complexity, the hunger, the lack of flavor, the lack of flexibility, the lack of energy, and the feeling of deprivation. We quit our diets and gain back the weight weve lost. sometimes we gain even more. Each time we go on another diet of deprivation, the weight becomes more difficult to lose, and we become even more frustrated and discouraged. Then we eat more and exercise less, causing ourselves more frustration, discouragement, depression. Soon we are in a vicious cycle. We begin to ask ourselves, Why bother. We begin to blame ourselves for having no will power when what we really need is clear, scientifically-based information that will help us develop a healthier lifestyle we can live with for the rest of our lives. Deliberate restriction of food intake in order to lose weight or to prevent weight gain, known as dieting, is the path that millions of people all over the world are taking in order to reach a desired body weight or appearance. Preoccupation with body shape, size, and weight creates an unhealthy lifestyle of emotional and physical deprivation. Diets take control away from us. Many of us who diet get caught in a yo-yo cycle that begins with low self-acceptance and results in structured eating and living because we lack trust in our body and are unwilling to listen and adhere to our bodys signals of hunger and fullness. On diets, we distrust and ignore internal signs of appetite, hunger, and our need to be physically and psychologically satisfied. Instead, we depend on diet plans, measured portions, and a prescribed frequency for eating. As a result, many of us have lost the ability to eat in response to our physical needs. we experience feelings of deprivation, then binge, and finally terminate our health program. This in turn leads to guilt, defeat, weight gain, low self-esteem, and then were back to the beginning of the yo-yo diet cycle. Rather than making us feel better about ourselves, diets set us up for failure and erode our self-esteem. The attitudes and practices acquired through years of dieting are likely to result in a body weight and size obsession, low self-esteem, poor nutrition and excessive or inadequate exercise. Weight loss from following a rigid diet is usually temporary. Most diets are too drastic to maintain. they are unrealistic and unpleasant. they are physically and emotionally stressful. And most of us just resume our old eating and activity patterns. Diets control us. we are not in control. People who try to live by diet lists and rules learn little or nothing about proper nutrition and how to enjoy their meals, physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle. No one can realistically live in the diet mode for the rest of their life, depriving themselves of the true pleasures of healthy eating and activity. We Dont Fail Diets. They Fail Us. Decades of research have shown that diets, both self-initiated and professionally-led, are ineffective at producing long-term health and weight loss or weight control. When your diet fails to keep the weight off, you may say to yourself, If only I didnt love food so much . . . If I could just exercise more often . . . If I just had more will power. The problem is not personal weakness or lack of will power. Only 5 percent of people who go on diets are successful. Please understand that we are not failing diets. diets are failing us. The reason 95 percent of all traditional diets fail is simple. When you go on a low-calorie diet, your body thinks you are starving. it actually becomes more efficient at storing fat by slowing down your metabolism. When you stop this unrealistic eating plan, your metabolism is still slow and inefficient that you gain the weight back even faster, even though you may still be eating less than you were before you went on the diet. In addition, low-calorie diets cause you to lose both muscle and fat in equal amounts. However, when you eventually gain back the weight, it is all fat and not muscle, causing your metabolism to slow down even more. Now you have extra weight, a less healthy body composition, and a less attractive physique. Diets require you to sacrifice by being hungry. they dont allow you to enjoy the foods you love. This does not teach you habits which you can maintain after the diet is over. Most diet programs force you to lower your caloric intake to dangerously low levels. The common theory is that if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. But when you eat fewer calories than your body needs to maintain its life-sustaining activities, youre actually losing muscle in addition to fat. Your body breaks down its own muscles to provide the needed energy for survival. Traditional diets which use calorie restriction to produce weight loss are no longer appropriate. Most weight-loss programs measure success solely in terms of the number of pounds lost per weight loss attempt. Diets dont take into account the quality of the process used to achieve that weight loss or the very small likelihood of sustained weight loss. For long-term good health, you need to move away from low-calorie diets and focus on enjoyable physical activity and good nutrition. Exercising regularly and eating lean-supporting calories, protein and carbohydrates, and reducing fat-supporting calories will not only help you look and feel better, it will also significantly reduce your risk of disease. America spends billions of dollars on different ways to fix people. If we focused more on prevention and on improving our day-to-day behaviors, we could cut health care costs in half. Contrary to popular belief, leading a healthy lifestyle doesnt have to be difficult. it doesnt have to painful or time-consuming. Making gradual, simple changes in your diet and physical activity will make great improvements in your health and well-being, and they can drastically reduce your risk of disease.

High Carb Low Carb Whos Right. | | Are you frustrated and confused about your diet. So when America cut calories on a low fat, high carbohydrate diet it was a disaster that ended-up making Americans fatter than ever. And basically Americas weight problem was primarily caused by the overconsumption of carbohydrates. America Started Losing Weight Rapidly... By the mid 1990s Americans realized that carbohydrates were addictive and fattening so a switch was made back to the extremely popular low-carb, high-fat diets that were originally introduced by an American doctor in 1972. And lo-and-behold, America started losing weight rapidly, but then the trouble began... Weight Loss Slowed to a Grinding Halt... At first the low-carb diet worked like magic, but then suddenly, for many individuals, the weight loss slowed to a grinding and frustrating halt. And the same pattern was noticed in the 1980s when so many people jumped on the bandwagon with the low-fat dieting which gave quick but temporary results. What is the problem. Why did each of these diets work at first and then failed in the long-run. Who is right. low-carb or high-carb. In reality, BOTH are right yet both are dead wrong. Let me explain... The Bodys Fuel of Choice is FAT... Your brain loves to burn glucose blood sugar and your muscles love fat, especially your heart muscle. In fact, fat is the only fuel used by your heart. Your muscles also love blood sugar as fuel when it makes quick moves and explosive motions like heavy weight training where the conversion of fat to ATP adenosine triphosphate takes too long. So in reality, your body actually prefers to have glucose AND fat at its fingertips for energy. And here lies the answer to our diet question, Which diet is best. high-carb or low-carb. And the answer is. A UNIQUE combination of the two. Please hear me out... Fat Falls Off Quickly at First... When a person begins to follow a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet, calories are lowered and the fat falls off quickly at first. But because the diet is carbohydrate based, glycogen levels are almost always full, so any excess calories and carbohydrate is routinely converted to triglyceride which is a fancy name for fat, that will soon be deposited in your fat cells as BODYFAT. Carbohydrates eaten in excess, as on a high-carb diet, stimulate the consistent production of insulin which TOTALLY blocks your bodys ability to burn fat and later will help store the excess carbohydrate as fat. Hence, the person loses weight at first, then may gain weight later as carbohydrate addiction sets in. But the low-carb diet is not any better... Your Body is Burning Fat Exclusively... When a person begins to follow a low-carbohydrate diet, the weight can fall off dramatically because insulin is in check and your body is forced to use fat as its primary fuel source. But, because the carbohydrate content is low, eventually your body will run out of glycogen, which is a carbohydrate reserve stored in your muscles. Once glycogen levels are depleted your body makes a radical shift into a state called ketosis, which means your body is burning fat EXCLUSIVELY. But before you jump to the conclusion that ketosis is the ultimate means of burning fat, let me offer you the downside... Your Metabolism Shuts Down... Ketosis is a radical fat burning state, but it is not in my opinion the best way to burn fat for a lifetime. Having worked with thousands of individuals in my 20+ year career as a fitness professional, consultant, personal trainer, nutritional counselor and gym own, ketosis is great for burning fat for only very short periods of time. Eventually, if a person stays in ketosis the body can get nervous because it believes you are starving, due to an extremely low carbohydrate intake. And when the body gets nervous about starving, many times its first reaction is to shut down your metabolism. And a lowered metabolism spells disaster... Your Body Temperature May Plunge as Metabolism Goes Down... Without glycogen reserves, the body is assuming that food is scarce, so it shuts down to preserve your life in case of famine. This is easily detected by taking your body temperature during the day. Your temperature should be around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit if your metabolism is up to speed. If your body believes you are starving either through low-calorie, low-fat, low-carb , or low-protein intake or all of the previous, then it shuts down and your body temperature reflects this by dropping. The longer you diet the lower your temperature metabolism may plunge. Midday readings of 96 or 97 degrees can often mean your metabolism is in super slow motion and will force your body to hang on to all of its fat reserves. And if your metabolism stays low, you may even start to gain weight on low calorie meals. So now you see the problem unveiled. But what is the solution. Thats an easy one... You Need a Diet that Targets Your Own Bodyfat and Keeps Your Metabolism Stoked... In 1991 I created my now famous diet program, The Fat Burning Diet. Well, if you remember your chemistry from high school, you will remember that a calorie is a measure of energy. Our bodies are amazing enough to take the food we eat and convert it into energy called calories. Some food or human fuel is more potent than others. Some fuels burns faster. while some fuels store easier. Simple sugars the white sugar in your cabinet, the sugar in your soda pop, the sugar in candy burns the fastest and is loaded with energy calories. If you cant burn this fuel instantly, it will be stored in your body as fat.
