2008-06-12 Glaxo: 4M people tried diet drug since launch-International Herald Tribune

Glaxo: 4M people tried diet drug since launch

GlaxoSmithKline said Wednesday that 4 million people have tried alli since the drug hit shelves a year ago. Alli is the only nonprescription weight loss pill approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The only over-the-counter, federally approved weight loss pill in the U. S. isnt exactly flying off shelves, but its not because Americans are getting any slimmer.

In clinical trials, people using alli lost an additional 2 to 3 pounds for every 5 pounds lost through diet and exercise. When taken with meals, the drug blocks the absorption of about one-quarter of any fat consumed. That fat about 150 to 200 calories worth is passed out of the body, potentially resulting in loose stools.

University e-mail has done nothing whatsoever to stem the deluge of spam e-mails for diet pills, Russian mail-order brides, bust-enlargement creams, prescription medications, all natural male enhancements and A and M tuition statements. Theres pills to lose inches, pills to gain inches (what Im waiting for is a pill to transfer inches) and of course that cream thats guaranteed to increase my cup size by three (what Im trying to figure out is why it only works on my bustif I forget to wear gloves while applying it will my hands increase three glove sizes) To quote a friend of mine: if you added together all the extra inches promised by all the male enhancements I get in my inbox in a single day, the distance would reach around the globe several times.

2008-06-09 Strike up the band for Fern Britton-Sunday Mirror

But I now understand it isnt that simple. No matter how hard the healthy-eating message is rammed home, for many people its not enough. Doctors have found the majority of people who lose weight through dieting or even slimming pills pile the weight back on within a year or two. And when youre talking stones, not pounds, thats a health crisis.

Of all the weight-loss treatments used by the NHS, gastric band surgery is the most successful but is chronically under-used. Its expensive, but treating obesityrelated illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and depression is more expensive - bleeding dry half a billion pounds of taxes every year.

A An elimination diet is a diet prescribed by dietitians and allergy specialists to exclude common food allergens, salicylates, preservatives, colourings and other food chemicals that may have a role in exacerbating or triggering allergic conditions.

There are situations in which certain supplements may be advisable, for example during or in preparation for pregnancy, but for most people, a varied, balanced diet should easily provide enough vitamins and minerals for good health.

Women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should talk to their doctor about optimising their diet and lifestyle (good nutrition, sensible levels of activity, minimal drugs and toxins) as well as taking a folate supplement.

2008-06-08 Can Blue Zones Help Turn Back the Biological Clock : NPR

People look at, for example, the loss of accommodation in the lens of the eye. Most people become farsighted, usually in their early 40s. It doesnt happen to everyone, so you cant say its a universal sign of aging. Graying of hair, loss of collagen in the skin, all of these are changes that have been described with regard to aging. Theres a change in body composition as people get older. It can obviously be influenced by exercise and diet, but in general, we lose muscle mass and gain body fat. The immune system changes with age and becomes less competent, but again, not in any universal way that we can say is a characteristic of aging.
