Soy Intake and Blood Cholesterol Concentrations. A Cross-Sectional Study of 1033 Premenopausal Women in the Oxford Arm of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition

OBJECTIVE. The objective of this observational study of diet and plasma lipids was to determine if a relationship exists between soy consumption and blood cholesterol concentrations.

STUDY DESIGN. This was conducted as a cross-sectional study of 1,033 pre- and postmenopausal women representing a wide range in soy food intake. Study participants included 570 vegetarians, 361 non-vegetarians, and 102 vegans. Soy food intake was assessed with a validated food frequency questionnaire. Blood samples were collected approximately 5 months following the collection of the food frequency questionnaires. Blood samples were analyzed for levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol.

RESULTS. As one would expect, the diet groups were associated with soy consumption. The vast majority of women consuming the highest amounts of soy were vegetarians and vegans, while the majority of women consuming the lowest amounts of soy were in the non-vegetarian group. Soy consumption was negatively correlated with LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, and the ratio of total to HDL-cholesterol such that increasing soy consumption resulted in lower total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations. In contrast, the level of soy consumption was not associated with HDL-cholesterol concentrations. While not statistically significant, these associations were slightly stronger in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women.

CONCLUSION. The data from this large cross-sectional study indicate that soy consumption has beneficial lowering effects on total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations.

Long Term Efficacy of Soy Based Meal Replacements vs. An Individualized Diet Plan in Obese Type 2 DM Patients. Relative Effects on Weight Loss, Metabolic Parameters, and C-Reactive Protein

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to determine if a soy based meal replacement plan could be used to aid in weight loss in subjects with Type 2 diabetes and to compare the effects of the soy based meal replacement plan with an individualized diet plan.

STUDY DESIGN. In this randomized, clinical trial, 104 obese men and women over 30 years of age were randomized to one of two treatment groups, a soy based meal replacement plan or an individualized diet plan. The individualized diet plan was based on recommendations from the American Diabetes Association. Subjects were maintained on these diets for 12 months. Body weight, C-reactive protein, glycemic control, plasma insulin, and plasma lipids were measured throughout the study period.

RESULTS. The results of this study demonstrated several beneficial effects of the soy based meal replacement plan over the individualized diet plan. The soy based meal replacement group lost more weight on a percentage basis over the study period than the group using the individualized diet plan. Compared to baseline, the soy based meal replacement plan reduced the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein, HbA1c, and glucose, while these reductions from baseline were not observed in the group using the individualized diet plan. Additionally, in comparison to the individualized diet plan, the soy based meal replacement significantly reduced the plasma glucose at 3 and 6 months.

CONCLUSION. The data from this human clinical trial indicates that soy based meal replacement plans appear to have multiple benefits including improvement in glycemic control, reduction in C-reactive protein, and weight loss. The authors suggest that soy based meal replacement plans may be an viable weight loss method for diabetics.
