2008-03-14 Dr. Doug Graham - Overcoming Common Issues of the Raw Food Diet (Part 1)

I like all my food and it took me a long time to realize that essentially, Im in a relationship with food. And that what ended up happening was that I loved all food, but all food did not love me back. And I much prefer to be in relationships with people who love me as much as I love them. Those are the most rewarding relationships. And so, gradually, I came to the realization that I was going to have to make some decisions about my food based on how much the food loved me. How did it make me feel Did I want to wake up the next morning feeling like I have been in a train wreck Did I want to ache in my joints, or be congested in my head Or did I just want to feel fantastic all the time. Eventually, I committed to what was called an all-raw diet and failed miserably for seven years on the all-raw diet.

2008-02-07 How is food allergy diagnosed

The advantage of a food challenge is that if the patient has an allergic reaction only to the suspected foods and not to the other foods tested, the diagnosis of food allergy is confirmed. Just as with a rechallenge after the elimination diet and with the skin tests, however, someone having a history of severe reactions should not be tested with a food challenge because of the danger of inducing another severe reaction. In addition, this procedure is expensive because it is difficult and requires a lot of time, especially for patients with multiple food allergies. Consequently, double-blind food challenges are done infrequently. They are done most commonly, however, when the doctor wishes to obtain evidence to confirm the suspicion that the patients symptoms are not due to a food allergy. Then, additional efforts may be directed at

2008-01-21 The Badger Herald - Food columnist diets, loathes it

The next day I followed a vegan diet, one of the more popular diets among college students. A variety of concerns the idea that eating meat fosters animal cruelty, dissatisfaction over the amount of arable land that it takes to raise cattle, a subjective distaste for meat and religious concerns, to name a few lead vegans to eat only plants, eschewing dairy, eggs, meat and all of their derivatives. Snack foods were my friends on my vegan day. A lack of motivation and a lack interest in vegan food led me to snack on dairy-free crackers and bowls of cereal and soymilk instead of eating regular meals. I only got remotely creative at dinnertime, when I made a teriyaki tofu stir-fry. While I did not starve on this day, the monotony of the food left me uninspired.

2008-08-05 Press Release - Universal Diet for Literate Adults Found

Tucson, AZ Since the diet uses simple math, The Pen and Paper Diet has been found to be universal in nature. The basic idea of the book is that a person requires a certain amount of calories to maintain a specific weight. Research from the National Academy of Sciences was republished in the book and helps people easily find their calorie requirement which is dependent on their height, sex, age, weight and activity level. Most people that are overweight can immediately begin consuming their required amount of daily calories for their ideal weight and will begin observing weight loss within 2 weeks. A person just needs to track calorie consumption on paper while they continue to eat the types of food they enjoy. It takes about 3 minutes a day and uses the simple idea of a calorie budget. 2008-02-15 Vue Weekly : Edmontons 100 pct. Independent Weekly : Pollan battles on the frontlines of food

Though the food landscape Pollan reveals is undoubtedly bleak, he does offer hope. Again using a broad, common sense approach - I resist calling it and ldquo;holistic and rdquo; mostly because Pollan and rsquo;s rigour and thoughtfulness don and rsquo;t deserve to be lumped in with some of the quacks and charlatans who like to propagate the term - Pollan demonstrates how we can escape the Western diet. By taking the time not only to find out where our food is coming from but also to prepare it and eat it - one of Pollan and rsquo;s sharpest criticisms is of the Western way of eating in itself, a hurried, solitary affair that holds none of the pleasure, to say nothing of the health benefits, of other cultures and rsquo; habits - he says, we can go a long way towards getting ourselves back into a healthy way of eating. While it may not be entirely as simple

) - More fat or more food This is a question Ive begun to ask my clients. I personally prefer more food, and most of my clients say that they do too. Lets face it, were not Olympic athletes, and were certainly not Michael Phelps. Speaking about the Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, the media has grabbed our attention by giving us the scoop on his high calorie, high fat eating habits. Pizza, hamburgers, pasta, some all in one meal. But, let me say now that an Olympic athlete such as Michael Phelps needs between 8,000 and 10,000 calories a day to meet his energy needs for training. If he followed a low fat diet, the volume of food he would need to eat to reach 8 calories per day would be just about impossible. Fat is a calorie dense nutrient, hence he needs both fat and more food. But for us mere

2008-05-02 Starve, but your way

Take the Zone Diet, for instance. It is low in fruit, vegetables, grain and fibre and high in protein. A low-carb diet produces a quicker loss of fluid that results in rapid weight loss. Since the calorie intake is too low in this diet, its not the fat that is lost but lean muscle. Not only is this kind of lost weight regained quickly, it also makes the body put on double the amount of weight when a person goes off the diet, says Dr Karuna Chaturvedi, chief dietician, Apollo Hospitals. The Atkins is a high-fat-low-carb diet, which promotes meat, cheese and whole grains and keeps one off sugar and white bread. However, doctors say that going off sugar or white bread is not the answer. A diet consisting of only one food group does not meet nutritional needs and will only prove to be harmful in the long term, says Puri.

2008-03-10 Food "superallergies": The First Italian Study Proves That They Can Be Cured With The Incriminated Allergen

By setting an alimentary desensitization protocol against milk and egg proteins, the medical team of the Pediatric Clinic of the University of Trieste, located at the Institute of Child Health Burlo Garofolo, has demonstrated the possibility to reeducate the organism of "superallergic" children to accept incriminated foods without suffering from severe, and occasionally lethal reactions such as anaphylaxis or edema of the glottidis. The study directed by professor Alessandro Ventura, Director of the Clinic lasted three years, at the end of which 36 pct. of the children involved, once severely allergic with important, generalized reactions to even minimal contact with the dangerous food, and therefore life threatened, has re-achieved the ability to follow a normal diet without presenting any adverse reactions. On the other hand, 54 pct. of
