2008-09-03 Thomas Sutcliffe: Cut-price food deals fuelling the obesity epidemic - Thomas Sutcliffe, Columnists - The Independent

One big chunk should go to us and ndash; the people passing through those tills and loading up with the two-for-one pork pies and the Halloween packs of chocolate bars. And the other big chunk should go to the Government, which has naively accepted the industrys claims that voluntary measures are the best way of proceeding, when it should have been clear from the beginning that the volition is pretty weak. The Government (and all taxpayers by extension) have a very strong motive for improving the British diet. It will cost them (and us) much less in terms of health care. But it is likely to cost supermarkets and food manufacturers more to deliver that fiscal and social saving. And at present the price of foot-dragging is only a disappointed head shake from the FSA and a bit of bad press.

I doubt that anyone was under the impression that what really gets the big food retailers out of bed in the morning is a driving ambition to improve the health of the nation. 2008-09-03 Sustained by the warm inner glow of the 100 Mile Diet The Courier-Mail

While I could certainly afford to shed some kilograms, its not about weight loss, rather about eating foods produced locally. The concept, known as being a "locavore", is not new, but it has taken off around the world with the publication of the book, The 100 Mile Diet, in which Canadian couple Alisa Smith and J. B. MacKinnon attempt to eat only foods that come from a 100-mile (about 160km) radius for an entire year.

2008-09-03 Health Experts Study Changes in Maori Diet - Health - redOrbit

This culture carried through to today, but with high-fat foods now readily available, KFC was replacing the traditional diet of birds, fish and vegetation.

Partly as a result of high-fat diets, Maori have, on average, the poorest health of any ethnic group in New Zealand, with abnormally high rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and heart failure.

At the NZ Dietetic Associations national conference this month, health researcher Christina McKerchar will address the dramatic changes in Maori eating habits during the past 200 years in a talk called From Kereru to KFC.

I first told the patient she was capable of making the right decisions when it came to choosing foods. I told her to always ask herself if it is healthy and that 99 percent of the time, she would be correct. I gave her an example of fried chicken versus baked chicken. I then gave her the example of three wings versus two wings.

2008-08-31 Reasons people fall off the diet wagon - Utica, NY 13501 - The Observer-Dispatch

Long term dietary behavior is developed over decades and is nearly impossible to change. Engaging in a diet that requires you to give up your favorite foods or eat very different kinds of foods is bound to fail. Attempting to make quantum dietary changes is a recipe for failure.

Deep-rooted emotional challenges often manifest themselves in dysfunctional dietary behavior. High comfort foods are mistakenly ingested in an attempt to address these challenges.

An incorrect concept of portion size seems to be at the core of Americas battle with fat storage. We have grown accustomed to expecting oversized meals and express our dissatisfaction when they are not there. When asked to estimate the number of calories in a meal, many Americans understate the quantity of food by nearly 50 percent.
