Better Living: Are you getting enough to eat?

Unfortunately, the body is quick to store fat, but reluctant to use it - unless it experiences an extended food shortage or famine (usually an extreme diet). And then the body is even quicker to rebuild its fat stores after the food shortage is over, in case it is needed for an even longer famine. This is why frequent dieters have less success and more weight gain with each successive diet. I hear this all the time from people that dont understand why it was once so easy to lose weight on a diet, and now they cant seem to lose anything on a diet and are hitting their all-time high weight levels. They feel like they are failing at dieting. They arent failing. The diet is failing them. Diets are one of the primary causes of obesity; because they put the body into a starvation mode and ultimately accelerate

Has it ever occurred to you that you may not be eating enough food? The average American is under eating, which is a result of frequent dieting, fear of overeating, and busy schedules. This seems a bit bizarre, considering the average American is also overweight. Is there a correlation? I believe there.

2006-06-26 Opposing Food Behaviors Converge Toward Health and Wellness

Almost one out of five consumers has started buying gluten- and wheat-free foods because they feel it is better for their family, and product introductions are rapidly growing (Chart 4). Stronger attitudes are also beginning to form around the desire for glutenfree food options. A quarter of consumers want their store to carry more gluten-free foods (28 percent), with almost half of parents who have children with food allergies agreeing (48 percent). Almost a third of consumers (30 percent) wish restaurants would carry more glutenfree options, with double the number of parents with allergic children (59 percent) wanting restaurants to provide the option. (See page 67 to learn more about gluten-free foods. ) Whether consumers are trying to avoid negative foods or add positive nutrients to their diet, the end result is to

2006-06-29 CalorieLab Calorie Counter News and raquo; Archives and raquo; Review: DietMinder personal food and fitness journal

Most dietitians require their clients to keep a food diary and many diet systems recommend keeping a food diary. It keeps you honest, and if your diet isnt working, the food diary is the place to look to troubleshoot it. Many dieters report that the simple act of writing down what they eat focuses their attention on their diet, and raises their awareness of all the occasions they eat without thinking. Finally, recording nutritional values for foods consumed, especially calories, can be an educational experience whose benefits outlast the keeping of the diary itself, since many foods have caloric values that are much greater (or less) than the average person might think.

These are substances that must be obtained in the diet because the body either cannot make them or cannot make adequate amounts of them. "It refers to both vitamins and minerals, along with amino acids and certain fats that must be consumed in the diet to support normal metabolism and maintain health. These nutrients are essential because unless they are regularly provided from foods, the body is vulnerable to a deficiency syndrome," says David L. Katz, M. D. associate professor of public health and director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine and author of The Flavor Point Diet (Rodale, 2005).

2006-06-30 The Evening Bulletin - Living Your Life By The Pritikin Standards

Now research has caught up with Pritikin and finds eating whole grains rather than refined grains protects against diabetes, heart disease, and gastrointestinal problems such as diverticulosis and constipation. Dr. Walter Willett and the Harvard School of Public Health, in their book Eat, Drink and Be Healthy (2001) (hereafter usually referred to simply as Dr. Willetts book), write that their research as well as other research from around the world support the health benefits of whole grains. The American Dietetic Association now recommends three servings of whole grain daily. The Associations views, as stated in this column, appear in its book, Complete Food and Nutrition Guide (2nd ed. , 2002). Recently the federal government updated its food pyramid to in effect incorporate Pritikins recommendations of long ago. The Food

2006-06-21 ICT Traditional diet appears to lower risk of cancer

Cahill: Part of the traditional Native American diet includes beans, peas, lentils and peanuts. This food group has been of interest in cancer research because these foods contain dietary fiber, folic acid, isoflavones and other compounds that have been shown to inhibit carcinogenesis in animal studies. A comprehensive review of these foods in the late 1990s concluded that the literature was too limited and that more research is needed. However, based on what we know currently about the nutritious value of these foods, they comprise a healthy, plant-based diet.

2006-06-17 Muskie Fishing What Muskies Eat, a Summary of Common Muskellunge Forage Fish

Walleye ranked extremely low in the Muskies diet. In the 1092 study fish, only 5 contained traces of Walleye. This study collected Muskies from 34 separate bodies of water, including lakes with large populations of Walleye. Despite their abundance in those lakes, Walleye proved to not be a very important food source for Muskies. In fact, during the study Muskies and Walleyes were observed in very close proximity to one another, as the Walleye is also a predator. Walleye made up 3. 4 pct. of the total stomach content volume found in the Muskies in that study. Bass species found accounted for 3. 1 pct. , even lower than that of Walleye. 63. 5 pct. of the total stomach content volume was made up of Yellow Perch and various minnow species.

2006-06-28 Will We Ever Eat Well Again. ::

Pawlicks book offers chapter after chapter of appetite-suppressing information about the nutritional worthlessness of the tomato salads and roast chickens we prepare with the best intentions. He offers only the slightest expression of regret for the onslaught. "Its a little bit of overkill, but I think it was necessary because there are so many people out there who are kind of skeptical" about anyone sounding the alarm on our big-food-business diet. He feels most of us still havent been driven to action by books like Eric Schlossers

A study conducted by the Department of Medicine at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 2004, later published in the US medical journal Clinical Endocrinology says that what humans consume directly affects their brains. While an oxidant-rich diet (items that accelerate oxygen supply to the brain) is good for the grey cells, the study warns against food that could lead to an escalation in blood fats (triglycerides) and reduced blood flow to the brain.
