2007-04-20 Paying for approval - Haaretz - Israel NewsRuth Moshe, a clinical dietitian specializing in the treatment of diabetics, was among the initiators and founders of the label. She says the idea started as a positive initiative that was ruined through commercialization: "The original idea was that the label would serve as a tool for diabetics and facilitate their purchases. " But something went wrong along the way: "When setting it up, I was thinking of the welfare of diabetics, but unfortunately the association has transformed this into a business, so that the small companies, for example, cannot get the label because they cant pay what the association charges. There are currently quite a few products that do not carry the label but are recommended for diabetics, and thats not fair to diabetics, many of whom are elderly and cannot necessarily afford them. 2007-12-21 Perils of Crossing the Establishment BoundariesBy touting his "five-fingered diabetic diet" as the key to weight loss and controlled blood glucose, he is perpetuating misinformation and doing his patients a disservice. Eichenbaum advises patients to avoid "bread and baked goods, potatoes and root vegetables, rice, pasta and fruit except for berries. " But that diet severely restricts meal plan options, ignores cultural preferences and lifestyle needs, and often results in increased non-compliance. Dietitians and diabetes educators stress the necessity of dietary changes and physical activity. Instead of making broad dietary directives that eliminate entire food groups, however, they encourage moderation and reduced portion sizes. They also make dietary recommendations that factor in an individuals cultural tastes and lifestyle requirements. www.commonvoice.com
2007-11-05 The Shared Human Experience Makes Dieting A Community EventRight now Im looking more for inspiration. I have more lows than I do highs. Im still coming out of the gates so to speak. For the most part the past year Ive dropped a little weight by just cutting back, but God do I still have my downfalls. I know for certain since I am a diabetic that I need a low carb diet so I wont have the sugar spikes. I know I cant be completely low carb because my kidneys cant stay in ketosis for long because of my diabetes. I dont know how to live without the insulin and I cant seem to get a straight answer to this one simple question can I still lose weight on a low carb diet and still take inject my insulin Ive asked doctors, looked online, read book after book and I cant find that answer. Its discouraging, Jimmy, so discouraging. www.commonvoice.com
2007-11-01 The Daily JournalIn the late 1990s, a new trend in diabetic meal planning -- carb counting -- started to take hold. This system tends to be simpler than other methods because it centers on just one nutrient. It also allows more choices in your diet because you dont have to worry about finding an exact match for a food in the exchange lists, which can get tricky with mixed dishes like soup and stir-fry. The first step in tracking your carbs is to work with your dietitian (or doctor) to figure out the number of calories you need to take in each day. The number depends on your age, activity level and current weight. www.daily-journal.com The Kankakee areas number one local news, sports, weather, entertainment and business source. - Daily-Journal Kankakee newspaper video news sports weather business entertainment opinion classifieds autos cars homes real estate jobs careers shopping obituaries
2007-05-22 Low glycemic diet promotes more weight loss in obese diabeticThe researchers found that change in body weight and body fat percentage did not differ between the diet groups overall. However, for those with insulin concentration at 30 minutes above the median (midpoint), the lowglycemic load diet produced a greater decrease in weight (12. 8 lbs. vs. 2. 6 lbs. ) and body fat percentage (2. 6 percent vs. 0. 9 percent) than the low-fat diet at 18 months. There were no significant differences in these end points between diet groups for those with insulin concentration at 30 minutes below the median level. Among all the participants in the study, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) and triglyceride concentrations improved more on the lowglycemic load diet, whereas low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) concentration improved more on the low-fat diet. www.spiritindia.com Diet :: Low glycemic diet promotes more weight loss in obese diabetic - Read best informations on Diet articles at , current updated articles and news on Diet
2007-02-23 Why One Woman Stopped Cooking: The Raw Story - Diabetes HealthFor 36 years, I tried many diets and natural treatments. Three years ago, I decided to try the raw-food diet. When I began the raw diet, I was taking 22 to 24 units of insulin daily, and I had good control on the low-carb/high-protein diet. I now need only six to eight daily units, with excellent control, and I am satisfied, free of cravings, energetic, and happy. Some may say the decreased need for insulin is a result of fewer calories, but the biggest change for me has been in long-acting insulin requirements, which demonstrates an overall improvement in the general diabetic condition. www.diabeteshealth.com Diabetes Health - Newsrooms: Type 1. Boomer should have little to no issues as long as he takes care of himself. Type 2 diabetes does not transform itself into type 1. It is a different disease. However, Type 1, which was formally called juvenile diabetes, can be developed by adults. In a type 1, the pancreas produces no insulin, so insulin injections are mandatory. In a type 2, the body may produce insulin, just not enough;or, the insulin produced might not be able to be used properly for various reasons. Type 2 diabetics can usually control their glucose levels (and so the disease) by altering their diet, and increasing their excersize. Oral medication also is prescribed fairly often, although in some cases, type 2 diabetics also require insulin therapy.
