2007-10-26 Is sugar killing you the Daily Mail

A sensible article at last which tells it how it is, sugar manufacturers are feeding an addiction and are no better than drug pushers. Sugar kills, in all its forms and it is a perfectly legal poison we dole out to our kids every single day. Health experts dont seem to realise the damage that sugar does to a body and condemn those who go on sugar free diets as faddy. They would rather dole out another drug than admit that they could possibly be wrong.

2007-10-25 Fond du Lac Reporter-FdL County employees offered help for diabetes

Buechel, himself a diabetic for 19 years, is participating in the program, learning how to better manage his condition with diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.

The county is offering its employees a voluntary diabetes management program. As an incentive to get employees to join the program, the countys insurance carrier is waiving co-pays on diabetic medications, equipment and supplies, and nutritional counseling for participants, said Fond du Lac County Executive Allen Buechel.

Participation is voluntary and includes an educational/health monitoring program so diabetics can learn how to self-manage their condition. Better management means fewer complications and, ultimately, reduced health-care costs, Buechel said.

Researchers at Tufts University analyzed diet questionnaires answered by 4,757 non-diabetic men and women with varying stages of AMD. Turns out that study participants who ate the most refined carbohydrates were 17 percent more likely to develop blinding AMD than those who consumed the least.

Trying to find ways to stave off this widespread problem has been the subject of much research, especially with regards to dietary supplements and foods rich in antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E and other minerals. But new research is shifting the focus to an entirely different dietary area: refined carbs.

2007-10-23 The Enid News and Eagle, Enid, OK-How diabetes affects sexual function

Preventing and treating neuropathy requires good control of blood sugar. The role of blood sugar control in reducing diabetic complications has been well documented. Men who lower their blood sugar reading by one percent over a three-month period reduced risk for the complications that can cause erectile dysfunction.

Although some promising studies are under way, no satisfactory treatment of female sexual dysfunction is currently available. A womans sexual response is too complex to respond to simple changes in blood flow. Diabetic sexual dysfunction in women was more likely to be related to psychological effects such as depression, anxiety and poor adjustment to the disease rather than physical complications such as neuropathy.

Exercise is a critical component in managing diabetes. Aerobic exercise can decrease the requirements of insulin and increase the bodys sensitivity to insulin. Exercise can also help to attain and maintain ideal body weight and decrease the risk for hypertensive diseases, including cardiovascular and peripheral vascular disease, while slowing the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage).

Type 2 diabetics who have lost protective neural sensation should not participate in treadmill walking, prolonged walking, jogging, or step exercises. Recommended exercises include low resistance walking, swimming, bicycling, rowing, chair exercises, arm exercises, and other non-weight bearing exercises.
