2010-03-09 Tufts Daily - Students with chronic illnesses face challengesThe disease is caused by a flaw in glucose metabolism. When an individual eats, nearly all of the carbohydrates in his or her food are broken down into glucose molecules. After digestion, these small glucose molecules enter the blood stream. In most individuals, the body is able to recognize the blood and rsquo;s increased sugar concentration and release insulin, which allows the body to store the surplus sugar in the liver and muscles. In a diabetic individual, the body is unable to manage the blood and rsquo;s sugar levels.
2010-03-07 Study Examines Perceived Barriers to Care for At-Risk Patients with DiabetesThe exploratory study interviewed 34 primary care physicians in diverse practices in California, Indiana, Michigan and New Jersey who provided outpatient care to adult diabetic patients. Many of the physicians responded that patient-related socioeconomic concerns proved to be a significant barrier to maintaining good diabetic health. This included financial struggles by patients that kept them from maintaining the challenging lifestyle and diet that diabetes requires, such as buying healthy often more expensive food. Family-related concerns, such as a lack of support or caring for other family members before themselves, also proved a significant barrier for patients. The study also found that other medical conditions, such as pain or depression competed with patients efforts to control cardiovascular risk factors. A new study shows that primary care physicians believe the barriers that put patients with uncontrolled diabetes at risk for cardiovascular disease as being patient-related or system-related. 2010-03-04 Elliott Yamin in need of diabetes supplies in ChileType 1 diabetes affects roughly 10 pct. of the total diabetic population. It is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors (were still not sure exactly why things go wrong or what the trigger is) that lead to an autoimmune response on the part of a Type 1 diabetics immune system. Long story short, their immune systems kill off the beta cells in the pancreas. These cells are responsible for the manufacture of insulin, glucagon and pramilitide, all hormones needed to balance appetite, digestion and the ability of cells to utilize blood glucose. This autoimmune response is not caused by eating sugar, by being overweight or sedentary, or by having an unhealthy lifestyle. It does, however, sentence a person to a lifetime of daily, sometimes hourly insulin injections. I repeat, Type 1s have to have Former American Idol contestant Elliott Yamin told Fox that hes fearing for his health, as hes running out of medical supplies to treat his Typ.
2010-02-26 House Detective: Two distinct types of diabetes require different treatmentOne day one of Erins postings caught my eye, and I gave her a call. Erin was frustrated by some peoples response to her daughters illness. Seemed some thought if she just controlled her daughters diet, took her off the sweets, there would be no need for the daily four to eight finger pinpricks or three to six insulin shots. This might help," she adds. "Insulin is necessary or needed to process food/carbs. With a Type 1 diabetic the pancreas does not produce insulin at all. Without the insulin, the carbohydrates turn into sugar, which is spilled out of the body and no nutrition is absorbed, and the body and blood become poisoned. " More than a year ago Id heard Erins art was falling off we have a gallery in common. Shed always been one of its stars. 2010-02-22 A connection between diabetes and depressionBut no one had to tell this to M. Abdul-Malik. Abdul-Malik long suffered from chronic depression and hypertension. Eventually he became a type 2 diabetic. I never would have thought there was a connection, he claims. I was forty five and was on eight prescribed medications. Then a doctor told me one of the medications was affecting my kidneys. Thats when he saw some connections. For example, some of the foods that the Caveman Diet teaches us to avoid also contribute to anxiety, coffee being the prime example. Sugar is associated with diabetes and it has long been established that blood sugar levels can affect the mood. And salt is associated with hypertension, which is associated with stress. 2010-02-21 Dolphins may hold the key to a cure for type II diabetes - Science, News - The IndependentShared large brains that have high blood glucose demands may explain why two completely different species, humans and dolphins, have developed similar physiological mechanisms to handle sugar. Seals have the same diet as a dolphin but dont have this diabetic, on-or-off state. It may be because of this large brain factor. In terms of brain size compared to body size, humans come first and dolphins are next. We are looking at two species with big brains that have high demands for glucose. " They are warm blooded, social and highly intelligent animals, and just like humans their brain is much bigger than expected for their size. But dolphins also share something else with man and ndash; they suffer a diabetes-like state not seen in any other wild animal.
