2006-06-16 The Rising Nepal

If diabetes is not treated in time, it can lead to more serious problems, which can damage the heart, kidney, eyes, nerves, and feet. Non-insulin dependent diabetes can be controlled by dieting, weight loss and changing life style. One needs to exercise regularly and eat in a healthy way. He/she may also need to take tablets of diabetes or have insulin injection according to physicians advice. Type-one diabetic individuals have to depend on insulin for life. Type two diabetic individuals usually have their diabetes controlled with oral medicines. Type two diabetic should eat small regular meals, eat balanced diet, lose weight, quit smoking, should have regular blood test, dry feet well between toes and get eyes tested once a year even if his vision has not changed. He should educate himself about the basic requirements of the diet,

The anti-inflammatory diet emphasizes specific foods thought to decrease inflammation, such as whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, many vegetables and fruits, fish, lean turkey and chicken. It excludes foods that are thought to trigger inflammation such as wheat, corn, soy, dairy, red meat, caffeine, alcohol, peanuts, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and citrus fruits. The standard diabetic diet contains many of the same healthful foods as the anti-inflammatory diet, but it does not exclude foods thought to cause inflammation. The diets will be similar in fat, protein, and carbohydrate levels.

2006-04-27 Scientists Of The University Of Jaen Research Into The Benefits Of Olive Oil On Diabetes Prevention

The research group of the Department of Health Sciences of the University of Jaen is currently looking into more depth the basic biochemical and molecular mechanisms that cause vascular diseases in diabetic patients - the main reason of kidney and cardiovascular disorders- and how an olive oil-based diet can have a beneficial effect on these type of patients. This project is funded by the University of Jaen. The hypothesis is based on olive oil can change the balance of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system active components which, at least could partially explain its beneficial effect on diabetic patients. Indeed, previous studies conducted in animals reveal that different enzymes, that are part of the SRAA, alter their activity depending on the type of fat of the diet. 2006-10-02 Diabetes Mellitus and Ramadan fasting - Yemen Times

Iabetes Mellitus affects people of all faiths. Muslims are no exception. Many diabetic Muslims have a desire to fast during the month of Ramadan, although if they cannot for health reasons, they have a valid exemption. The dilemma for physicians and Muslim scholars is whether or not Muslim diabetic patients (1) should be allowed to fast if they decide to; (2) can fast safely; (3) can be helped to fast if they decide to; (4 ) can have their disease monitored at home; and(5) are going to derive any benefit or harm to their health. Fasting during Ramadan by a Muslim diabetic patient is neither his right nor Islamic obligation, but only a privilege to be allowed by his physician, at the patients request, knowing all the dangers and assuming full responsibility in dietary compliance and glucose monitoring, with good communication

2006-07-29 WebWire and reg; Vegan Diet Tops Traditional Diabetic Diet

Of the 99 diabetic participants, half were randomly put on a vegan diet and the other half on the ADA diet. Vegan dieters followed a simple plant-based diet, avoiding meat and dairy foods. They received roughly 10 percent of daily calories from fat, 15 percent from protein, and 75 percent from carbohydrates; yet their portion sizes were unlimited. The vegan group was also advised to take a daily vitamin B12 supplement. The ADA dieters had a few more rules. They consumed 15 to 20 percent of calories from protein, 60 to 70 percent from carbohydrates and monounsaturated fats, less than 7 percent from saturated fats, and no more than 200mg of cholesterol per day. Overweight participants within the ADA group were also advised to reduce daily calorie intake by 500 to 1,000 calories per day.

ANSWER: I dont know any diabetes specialist who doesnt insist that his or her patients follow a diet that prescribes the number of calories to be eaten and the amount of carbohydrate calories (this boys food infatuation) in the diet. What is his weight. He has to maintain a normal weight in order to stay in diabetic control. With his diet, its hard to believe his blood sugar is not always high. Sure, he can give himself insulin to lower blood sugar, but it is far better to keep sugar within normal bounds with diet and with as little insulin as possible. This boy needs to talk to a dietitian about diet control.

Despite all the publicity surrounding new research and new nutrition guidelines, many people with diabetes still believe that there is something called a diabetic diet. Many people with diabetes who are receiving not enough information about how to manage their condition think that this so-called diabetic diet means they have to keep away from sugar.
