Body mass index calculator ( BMI = kg/m2 )

Body Mass Index BMI can be used to indicate if you are overweight, obese, underweight or normal. It will, however, overestimate fatness in people who are muscular or atheletic. Because of these problems, this body mass index calculator shows extra statistics to help you be informed and judge your own body compared to others of the same height and age. Also offered are average weight and height charts and Body Mass Index charts, which show data you just cant find anywhere else.

Women tend to believe they look their best at values between 20 to 22 and men are usually satisfied with a BMI of 23 to 25. If your BMI is between 17 to 22, your life expectancy is longer than average. You dont need to lose weight.

If your BMI is between 23 and 25, you are not considered overweight by most people. But if your BMI is 26 or more, thats not good. But you knew that already.

Above all, Dont Worry, Be Happy. Its unhealthy to have anxiety over a less-than-perfect body image. And, if this calculators description of your body seems wrong for you, just trust your own judgment. A healthy mental attitude is just as important as physical fitness.

How to understand your Body Mass Index
The American Institute for Cancer Research considers a BMI between 18.5 and 25 to be an ideal target for a healthy individual. If a BMI is 25 or above, the person is considered overweight and at greater risk to develop health disorders like cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Clearly, the Body Mass Index is only one measurement used to approximate health status. Supplementing the BMI, a thorough physical examination including the measurement of blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate and diet are equally important in determing the overall health of an individual.

How is a BMI determined
The Body Mass Index is calculated the same way for both sexes.
The following is an example of the BMI calculation for a 5 foot 10 inches tall, 160 lb person.

Divide your height (in inches) by 39.36
to determine your height in meters
70 inches / 39.36 = 1.78 meters

Divide your weight (in pounds) by 2.2
to find determine your weight in kilograms
160 lbs / 2.2 = 72.73 kg

Square your height (in meters)
1.78 x 1.78 = 3.16

Divide your weight (in kilograms)
by your squared height
72.73 / 3.16 = 22.99

This final result (22.99 in this example) is your BMI

The body mass index calculator is only an estimate of the total amount of body fat (provided that age and sex are taken into account). However, the body mass index does not differentiate between muscle mass from fat mass. It is stressed that the body mass index is an estimate only and is not reliable to use for pregnant women, children, body builders, people with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and for those who are significantly obese.

We should aim to fall somewhere in the body mass index healthy weight range of 20 - 25 BMI.

It may overestimate body fat in athletes and those people with a muscular build

It may underestimate body fat in older people and others who have lost muscle

Whats your BMI

The healthy weight range is based on a measurement known as the Body Mass Index (BMI). This can be determined if you know your weight and your height.

Frame sizes vary and it is difficult for any simple measurement to establish a persons frame. It is more accurate to recommend a weight range, rather than a specific weight for a given height.

Here, weve made it easy for you. To calculate your BMI simply select your correct height and weight and let the BMI Calculator do the rest. Remember that weight is also related to build, and you should make allowances if you are stocky or of heavy build. Your BMI will vary slightly according to gender. A metric version is also available.

Being overweight means that you or your child has a body mass index that is above the 95th percentile for his or her age. A body mass index that is above the 85th percentile for his or her age puts your child at risk of becoming overweight. Since body mass index doesnt directly measure body fat, it is possible to be over weight but not obese. Some kids who are very athletic and have a large muscle mass, may be overweight, but if they do not have excess body fat, then they do not need help with weight loss. However, the vast majority of children who are overweight are also obese and do need help with weight management.

Being underweight or at risk of being underweight means that your child has a body mass index for his age that is lower than the 5th percentile. This can be normal, especially if your child has been growing and developing normally, has a healthy diet, and is active and energetic. However, being underweight can also be a sign of a problem and deserves a full medical exam, especially if your child is not gaining weight or has recently lost weight, has diarrhea, vomiting, poor appetite, an unhealthy diet, or a low energy level. Children that are underweight can also be at risk of having eating disorders, especially if your child is overly concerned about losing weight, has a poor self body image, exercises excessively, has stopped having periods, or is using laxatives to lose weight. You should see your doctor if you suspect that your child has a medical condition causing him to be underweight or if you suspect an eating disorder. See the Eating Disorders Guide for more information.

Calculate your Body-mass Index
Your body-mass index (BMI) measures your height/weight ratio. It is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters.

For instance, if your height is 1.82 meters, the divisor of the calculation will be (1.82 * 1.82) = 3.3124. If you weigh 70.5 kilograms, then your BMI is 21.3 (70.5 / 3.3124).

People with BMIs between 19 and 22 live longest. Death rates are noticeably higher for people with indexes 25 and above. (5/1/2001. The U.S. government recently changed these ranges to a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 24. I encourage you to take these numbers with a grain of salt. they are not as accurate as they sound.)

This is the American version of the calculation. Enter your height (in feet and inches) and weight (in pounds) in the boxes below, and then click calculate. These are converted to metric values to figure your BMI.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body mass index, or BMI, is a new term to most people. However, it is the measurement of choice for many physicians and researchers studying obesity. BMI uses a mathematical formula that takes into account both a persons height and weight. BMI equals a persons weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. (BMI=kg/m2).

Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the most accurate ways to determine when extra pounds translate into health risks. BMI is a measure which takes into account a persons weight and height to gauge total body fat in adults. Someone with a BMI of 26 to 27 is about 20 percent overweight, which is generally believed to carry moderate health risks. A BMI of 30 and higher is considered obese. The higher the BMI, the greater the risk of developing additional health problems.

Heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure are all linked to being overweight. A BMI of 30 and over increases the risk of death from any cause by 50 to 150 percent, according to some estimates. According to health experts, people who are overweight but have no other health risk factors (such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure) should eat healthier and exercise to keep from gaining additional weight. For people who are overweight and also have health risks, they recommend trying to actively lose weight. Be sure to consult your doctor or other health professional before beginning any exercise or weight-loss program.

In June 1998, the federal government announced guidelines which create a new definition of a healthy weight -- a BMI of 24 or less. So now a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight. Individuals who fall into the BMI range of 25 to 34.9, and have a waist size of over 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women, are considered to be at especially high risk for health problems.

Use the BMI CALCULATOR below to figure your BMI and then refer to the chart to see ranges for a healthy BMI.

Both Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference (WC) can be useful measures of determining obesity and increased risk for various diseases. According to the National Institutes of Health, a high WC is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension and cardiovascular disease when BMI is between 25 and 34.9. (A BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight and a BMI greater than 30 is considered obese.) WC can be useful for those people categorized as normal or overweight in terms of BMI. (For example, an athlete with increased muscle mass may have a BMI greater than 25 - making him or her overweight on the BMI scale - but a WC measurement would most likely indicate that he or she is, in fact, not overweight). Changes in WC over time can indicated an increase or decrease in abdominal fat. Increased abdominal fat is associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

To determine your WC, locate the upper hip bone and place a measuring tape around the abdomen (ensuring that the tape measure is horizontal). The tape measure should be snug but should not cause compressions on the skin. The following chart should be helpful in determining the possible risks associated with your BMI and WC.
