The Atkins diet is much more than just a diet for losing weight. its a diet that I believe should be followed for life, and one that I personally follow even when Im not trying to lose body fat. White sugar, corn syrup, refined white flour and other processed carbohydrates simply have no place in the diet of healthy human beings. Not too long ago, dietary fat was the enemy.

By the mid-1990s, the number of new foods and beverages whose labels proclaimed no fat or low fat hit an all-time high.

A new generation of dieters, following weight-loss plans such as the Atkins and South Beach diets, are gobbling up animal protein and high-fat dairy products and sullying their plates with only the most minute portions of starch and sugar.

Last year, 633 foods and drinks introduced in the United States carried claims of low, lower or reduced carbohydrate content, compared with 339 in 2002, according to market research company Productscan Online of Naples, N.Y. In 1999, only 47 low-carbohydrate items were introduced.

Carbohydrates are the starches, fiber and sugars found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans and feel-good foods such as ice cream, desserts and snack chips.

The obesity epidemic doesnt spare Native Americans, it seems. A diet of refined carbohydrates and processed foods seems to promote obesity in virtually everyone.

Theres little doubt that the obesity epidemic were now seeing around the world is caused in large part by the consumption of refined carbohydrates like white flour, white sugar and processed grains. Thats also why the Atkins diet is experiencing so much success. ditching the carbs helps people lose weight, plain and simple.

Im fascinated by the tension between vegetarians and low-carb diet advocates. Why Because Im both a vegetarian and a low-carber. Neither refined carbohydrates white flour, refined sugar, processed grains, high fructose corn syrup, etc. nor red meat rife with health risks and endangered by mad cow disease belong in the diets of people who wish to be healthy in my opinion. I avoid both.

I still eat meat. seafood, mostly. When traveling, Ill settle for chicken meat when nothing else is available, but I steadfastly avoid meat from mammals. Its more than just a nutritional decision, too. the treatment of animals by the cattle and pork industries is nothing less than criminal. If images of what actually goes on in the slaughterhouses were televised, there would be a national outrage and people would stop eating red meat thats why they dont televise the images, of course. Treating intelligent, conscious animals as sources of food to simply be fattened up and slaughtered for profit is nothing short of evil. Thats why I strongly support PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, even though this group regularly attacks the Atkins diet.

If youre finding all this confusing and dont know which box to put me into, join the crowd. I think Dr. Atkins was a hero for standing up to the medical community and helping people realize the health dangers of sugar and refined, processed foods. But turning to red meat, saturated fat, and fried foods is a nutritional disaster. Thats why I wrote Low-Carb Diet Warning which seeks to educate low-carb dieters about how to make their diets healthy. In truth, the vast majority of people on low-carb diets are simply trading one disease obesity for another heart disease, usually. Sure, you lose weight, but you pay the later.

On the other hand, a vegetarian diet isnt automatically healthy, either. Ive seen vegetarians pigging out on donuts while saying, No meat. Youd be amazed to learn how many vegetarian food products contain metabolic disruptors such as monosodium glutamate hidden as yeast extract on the ingredients label. And many vegetarians suffer from very real nutritional deficiencies -- and Im not just talking about vitamin B12, either. They suffer from deficiencies in zinc, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and many others.

Of course, by and large, vegetarians are far healthier than everybody else, because avoiding meat especially red meat is a sound nutritional strategy. So, you see, this whole issue isnt black and white. Both the low-carb dieters and vegetarians have their good points and bad points. Thats why I take the best from both worlds. Im a low-carb vegetarian.

You might ask, well what do you eat then What else is there Theres plenty of food thats both low-carb and vegetarian. Nature has provided an endless buffet of vegetables, beans, legumes, seeds, nuts, fruits, superfoods like chlorella and spirulina, herbs, medicinal plants, whole grains, and so on. Thats all you really need to be healthy and happy. You dont need to kill cows and pigs to be healthy, and you dont need to eat white flour, processed foods, soft drinks and all the popular junk foods sold at practically every grocery store in the country.

One more thing. I dont eat or drink dairy products, either. Cows milk is outstanding nutrition of youre a small furry cow, but if youre an adult human being, cows milk is a nutritional trainwreck. Humans are the only species on the planet that will drink the breast milk of another species. Not surprisingly, the nutritional content of cows milk is designed to grow big cows with small brains, which is why cows milk has almost no GLA gamma-linolenic acid, an essential oil for human brain function and is deficient in other minerals and vitamins needed by humans. Babies who drink cows milk are, studies have shown, not as smart as babies who drink human breast milk. So when I say that drinking cows milk is stupid, I dont mean it as an insult. I mean it as a clinical description.

PCRM unleashes latest attack on Atkins diet, but comparisons with Asian diet are invalid

Opponents of the Atkins diet are hard at work trying to discredit it. Dr. John McDougall and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine PCRM have unleashed their latest attack on the low-carb diet by claiming that because it causes ketosis, it therefore must be dangerous to a persons health. I dont disagree with this assessment, but the more important question is whether this state of ketosis is more dangerous than a person remaining overweight. Frankly, the health risks associated with temporary ketosis seem to outweigh the enormous risk of disease and death associated with obesity. Because, after all, a low-carb diet does help many people lose weight.

The PCRM takes some unjustifiable cheap shots at the low-carb diet in this latest announcement. For example, they state that people in Asia live on high-carbohydrate rice diets and seem to do just fine. Thats not an honest comparison for two reasons. First, the Asians who are doing fine on rice diets are physically active, and most Americans are not. Secondly, Asians are born with metabolic systems better able to handle grains and carbohydrates when compared to people of European or American Indian descent. I know this because Ive spent considerable time studying the dietary response to carbohydrates in the Chinese I lived in Asia for two years, I speak Chinese, and Im married to a full-blood Chinese. What I know is that Chinese people can consume a large bowl of noodles and a side dish of white rice without suffering the radical blood sugar swings normally experienced by white people like me. In other words, Chinese have evolved a superior metabolic response to dietary carbohydrates. Yet even that can be overcome by Western diets. when Asians start consuming fast food, processed food, soft drinks and other staples of the western diet, they also succumb to the ravages of diet-related diseases like cancer and diabetes. So, for the PCRM to state that Asians eat carbohydrates and are just fine is either disturbingly uninformed or outright deceptive. Asians have a unique metabolism well suited to the consumption of grains -- other people do not.

For many years, I have supported the PCRMs basic stance on health and especially on their effort to increase awareness of what really goes on behind closed doors in the beef industry, but I think that recently the organization has sadly turned to publicity tactics that are rather unethical -- like getting their hands on Dr. Atkins medical records and leaking them to the press. Thats an invasion of Atkins privacy, for one thing, and a violation of basic ethics. Sure, they were trying to make a point they proposed Dr. Atkins died of heart disease, but if they are really physicians, they have a special duty to uphold the privacy of medical records. The ends dont always justify the means.
