Critics of Atkins diet often miss the facts

This article was written by one of our Message Board Moderators GOOCH and published in the Columbus Dispatch.

Many news sources find it necessary to throw darts at people who are following the Atkins diet. The most common misperception is that people on Atkins eat nothing but fatty meats and eggs.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Even on the most-restrictive phase of the diet, you are required to eat two cups of salad greens not iceberg lettuce and one cup of vegetables, such as broccoli, spinach, green beans or many other choices.

It is true that you do limit carbohydrates, but is surviving on a diet of processed sugar and flour good for you

There are numerous reports of people who become ill or dont feel well while eating low-carb meals. In nearly every case, one will find that they have been adapting Atkins to whatever they think Atkins should be without reading the book or researching the proper way to do it. Many try to do without carbohydrates altogether, probably because of what they read or hear in the media.

My husband and I have been following Atkins since the end of August. We have both lost about 30 pounds. My husband once had an incredibly high cholesterol level. After three months, his cholesterol numbers were all in the normal range. I take medication for cholesterol and hope to be able to discontinue it soon. I used to live on antacids. I have had to take exactly two since August.

We feel that since starting the Atkins diet, we are eating healthier than ever and are feeling the results. We dont ever plan to go back to eating hundreds of grams of carbohydrates a day.

Help with Beginning the Atkins Diet

Since the late 1970s , its mostly been taught that in order to lose weight a person must count calories and fat grams. We now know that there is a much easier and better way and its called the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet was invented by Dr. Robert Atkins. While on the Atkins Diet you do not count calories or fat grams. Instead, you restrict your carbohydrates.

If you are overweight, theres good chance that you have a problem with blood sugar and insulin levels. Insulin is a fat producing hormone. By restricting the foods that stimulate excessive insulin release, you will lose weight. The Atkins diet does exactly this, reduces excessive insulin. The Atkins diet is a diet that can reverse hypertension, controls diabetes, end that dreaded afternoon fatigue, and help with many other medical conditions. On the Atkins Diet, the body switches from using glucose as its main source of fuel to almost entirely fatty acids for energy. Therefore, you burn fat instead of carbohydrates on a low carb diet, and lose weight. By reducing your intake of carbohydrates, you will enter a metabolic process called ketosis, which means you are burning fat.

One of the best things about the Atkins Diet is that you will not feel hungry. Thats right. You will eat without calorie counting. Many people believe that the Atkins diet is a meat only diet. This is untrue. On Atkins you will be eating many vegetables too. Some people think that Atkins is a No-Carb Diet when in fact, its a Low-Carb Diet.

If you are ready to begin the Atkins diet, please get the book. The Atkins book will help to explain the whole Atkins principle. There is a lot of information on this website to help you as well. The Atkins diet has four phases. The first phase is called the Induction Phase, which is the first two weeks of the diet. During the induction phase, a person is required to stay at 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. Learn about the Atkins Induction Phase here.

I would suggest joining the Atkins Diet Message Board so that you can talk with others and get help while on your weight loss journey. There you will find many Atkins friends for support. Make sure to read the reference and tips section of this site for more information. We also have a cookbook section that contains hundreds of Atkins Recipes that have been submitted by our members. Good luck on your journey to a better you.

Some of the most Frequently Asked Questions

Question. Why do I have bad breath

Bad breath is an indicator of the production of ketones as you burn body fat and is a good sign that the diet is working. To combat it, you may use chlorophyll must be sugarless, eat more parsley and dark green, leafy vegetables, and be sure that your water intake is at least 8 or more glasses daily.

Question. Since I have been on the Atkins Diet, my cholesterol has gone up. Why And what can I do about it

Its not uncommon for cholesterol to rise in the beginning. When a person loses weight, cholesterol usually rises because the body must break down stored fat for energy. However your total cholesterol should drop within two to three months. When looking at your cholesterol levels, pay attention to your HDL which is also known as the good cholesterol level. A rise in HDL cholesterol levels could be a good thing, if its all attributed to HDL cholesterol. If youve been following Atkins for some time and your cholesterol levels have not come down, there could be several other reason. Some people have a genetic factor that influences cholesterol regardless of diet. In these cases you may need to add essential oils and other supplements your diet. Please check with your physician on a regular basis.

Question. Is it true that I can subtract grams of fiber from my total carb count

Yes. In most cases, the fiber will not interfere with weight loss because it does not impact upon blood sugar levels.

Question. How can I avoid Constipation while on the Atkins Diet

First, make sure you are drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Lack of water is one of the main reasons for constipation.

You may need to consume some supplementary fiber in the form of wheat bran, psyllium husks or ground flaxseed. Another thing to consider is adding in more exercise which often helps constipation. Make sure you are eating your salads and vegetables.

Question. Since I have started doing Atkins I have terrible leg cramps. What do I need to get rid of them

During Induction, Atkins has a strong diuretic effect , which means you will lose a large amount of water weight, along with electrolytes, which contain the minerals potassium, magnesium and calcium. This is what causes the leg cramps. The best way to replace these is to salt your food to taste and take a mineral supplement that includes calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Question. Why do I have headaches when starting the Atkins Diet

The most common reason is that youve given up caffeine. Take some ibuprofen for relief. Other reasons, include sugar withdrawal, food sensitivities, skipping meals, lack of vitamins or dehydration from not drinking enough water.

Can I drink Alcohol while on the Atkins Diet

When you consume Alcohol, it is the first fuel to burn. While thats going on, your body will not burn fat. While this does not stop weight loss, it will postpones it until the alcohol has been used up. If you must drink alcohol, straight liquor such as scotch, rye, vodka, and gin would be the best choices as long as the mixer contains no sugar. If you have added alcohol to your diet and suddenly stop losing, give it up.

Question. Why arent my Ketosis sticks changing color

Since the body can only store a two-day supply of glucose in the form of glycogen when consuming 20 grams of carbs a day, it normally takes two to three days for your body to go into Ketosis. If you are past the two or three days, and still not in Ketosis, check more closely the number of carbohydrates you are eating. You may be eating more carbs than you think. Another thing to consider is that the sticks do expire. Check the date to make sure you have a fresh pack.

Question. What medications interfere with or need to be adjusted while I am doing the Atkins Diet

Its best to stop taking any unnecessary over-the-counter medications, such as cough syrup, diuretics, antacids, sleep aids, antihistamines or laxatives. Some prescription medications also inhibit weight loss so its a good idea to talk to your doctor to see if an alternative approach can be found if you find that you are not losing. Atkins is known to lower high blood sugar and high blood pressure so people who take insulin or oral diabetes medications, or medications to lower their blood pressure need to be closely supervised in order to adjust their dosage.

Question. Is it true that Atkins Dieters dont eat Vegetables

That is completely false. Atkins is not an all protein diet. Much of the news media have portrayed Atkins as an all meat and cheese diet which is simply untrue. Its best to stay away from starchy vegetables such as beets, potatoes and carrots. During the Induction phase, youll eat three cups of certain vegetables each day, primarily salad greens and other raw salad ingredients. During the other phases of the diet you gradually increase the amount of vegetables in your diet.

See below for a list of some of the acceptable Vegetables.

artichoke, celery root, pumpkin, artichoke hearts, rhubarb, asparagus chard, sauerkraut, bamboo shoots, collard greens, scallions, dandelion, snow peas, bean sprouts, dandelion greens, spaghetti squash, beet greens, eggplant, spinach, broccoli, hearts of palm, string or wax beans, broccoli, rabe, kale, summer squash, brussels, kohlrabi, tomato, bean sprouts, leeks, turnips, cabbage, okra, water chestnuts cauliflower onion, zucchini, alfalfa sprouts, daikon mushroom, arugula, endive, parsley, bok choy escarole, peppers, celery, fennel, radicchio, chicory, jicama, radishes, chives, lettuce, romaine lettuce, cucumber

Its perfectly normal for the body to go through adjustment periods while youre losing weight. No weight loss plan is a downhill slope. You will more likely see a loss, then a gain, then another loss.
Dont use daily weight changes as any indication of how you are progressing. While on the Atkins diet, you may find that your weight loss slows after the first two weeks. This is normal. If you weigh yourself daily, use those numbers to
calculate your average weight at the end of the week by adding the daily weights together and dividing by the number of days.
A better measure of your progress will be how loosely your clothes start to fit.
Thats also why its a good idea to measure yourself before
you begin.

Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is vital to your health and to help lose weight.
Water is necessary for the metabolism of your stored fat. Weight loss cannot occur without an active metabolism which requires large quantities of water. Cold water is best. The colder the water, the more energy the body must use to warm the water, thus burning
more calories.

Read labels for everything. This is very important so that you can familiarize yourself with carb counts. It is very useful to get a good carb. counter to keep on hand as well. You may also use the carbohydrate counter on this site.

A great tip is to set realistic goals. Do not expect to lose 5 lbs a week. Average weight loss is 1/2 to 2 lbs. a week.

Some people will experience a plateau or period of not losing. A true plateau is usually after a month without any loss. If this happens to you, try to evaluate how many carbs you have been consuming. It could be too much cheese, nuts, or artificial sweeteners.
