Review of Book Atkins New Diet Revolution | | First of all, Id like to point out that Fading to Black and Svelte Gal are complete and utter idiots. By the text in Fadings own post, he admits he hasnt tried the diet and therefore is in no position to comment on it. Svelte Gal has obviously not tried the eating program and I seriously doubt she has the capacity to read let alone comprehend the material Dr. Atkins is trying to relay. Total and complete boobs just like most negative posts.
Kidney failure due to Ketosis...more like exactly the opposite.
I have been on Atkins for over 8 months...lost 35 pounds (easily) within the first 3 months and have kept it off(easily) for the last 5. I have decided to drop about 20 more pounds so I am happily going back into induction(this is the part of the program that the naysays, who not surprisingly are the same fools who comment without actually reading the book, incorrectly think is the entire program)to drop the extra pounds, then Ill go right back into the maintenance phase.
Dont take anybodys word on this program. Read the book, if it doesnt make absolute common sense to you then dont undertake it. However, if it strikes you as brilliant and you decide to try it, follow it to the letter. Most of the people who fail on Atkins, never follow it as they should, and therefore never get their body into the magical state of Ketosis.
Beware the maniacal nutrition industry that has been feeding us propoganda for 30 years and fattening our people to the point of criminal liability. They are scared to death of Atkins not because he is just showing us a better way, but because he is throwing back the curtain to reveal the lies and mistruths weve been fed for the last couple of decades.

| Ive read many reviews of this book and the way of life it promotes, and I feel the need to add my two cents to the mix. To those who complain that they, or someone they knew, gained the weight back after they went off the diet. Of course you gained the weight back when you resumed the eating habits that made you fat in the first place. The Atkins Diet does not claim you will suddenly be able to eat whatever you want after youve lost the weight you want to lose. I think the reason this diet is so successful is that people see results right away, and thats a powerful motivator. I can honestly say I was never actually hungry on Atkins, which is not to be confused with having the strong desire to eat junk food just for the sake of eating it. There are many psychological and physiological reasons we become overweight, and Atkins works for me. To those who feel this plan isnt healthy, which is better--remaining obese or losing the weight | | |
| I was depressed about my weight. I went to the doctor, who sent me to a nutritionist. I followed the nutritionsts recommendations to the letter...kept my calories under 1,000 per day, kept a journal of everything I ate, and joined a fitness center. I worked out at least 4 times a week, for up to 80 minutes, and two months in a row was in the top 3 at the fitness center for total exercise effort. In three months, I lost 2 pounds. Talk about frustration.
Then I found Atkins. In 2 months, I lost 20 pounds, I was never hungry, my mood and energy improved, I quit counting calories and cut back on exercise. And the weight continued to come off the entire time I followed the diet...total of 35 lbs, which was my goal.
Exercise and low fat diet didnt work.
Atkins did.

| I decided to buy this book in January 2004 and start the Atkins diet... after learning not to use the dreaded D word anymore, I began my new eating lifestyle. This book is very informative. He doesnt just tell you what to do and that it will work he explains exactly what happens in your body and chemically what happens when you do andamp. dont eat sugar or other processed carbohydrates. I not only learned a lot about how my body functions, I learned my new way of life was the perfect way for me. I am 26 years old, and like I said I started Atkins on my birthday in Jan. 2004. I weighed at least 350, not sure exactly, the hosptial scales didnt go higher than that. As of Oct 2004, not even a year later, I am over 100 lbs lighter, off my blood pressure medicine and not ever looking back. I am really tired of the critics who say this is the new fad for the year, its only water weight, it doesnt work, your cholesterol raises off the charts... LIES. All lies. Do they honestly want people to believe that I have lost over 100 lbs of WATER I am trying to eat healthier and by doing so, lose the weight. I had my blood checked for EVERYTHING they could, and my blood work came out perfect. And thats not to say that my family doesnt have issues from generation to generation. My father went in for 5 bypasses on his heart when I was in high school... and he is not/was not over weight. This book will explain it all and help people who believe its impossible for them to lose weight, and give you a miracle, like I have gotten.

| I wish I had read his works years ago, but I did not because of all of the controversy surrounding him. After lowering my carbs, I felt more energetic and my clarity of thought was better. I always felt okay, but I noticed a difference for the better after trying his low carb diet. As a vegetarian, I had difficulty with his low carb diet such as induction because few foods that are not fish, meat or poultry have low carbs. I went to eating poultry but did not like that. So, I would say (and he does mention this) staying on induction is difficult if you are a vegetarian because to eat under 20 carbs a day is not that easy over a several day or week long period, but anything is possible. However, I was glad to find additional choices through reading his literature--I went to herbal fruit ice teas instead of fruit juices, and stopped eating bread. I used ot eat a lot of french rolls, and pastries like spinach rolls. I had bread with everything--what a disaster. Some of my favorite foods are still okay. I can actually have heavy cream or half and half (such as with iced coffee or hot chocolate) instead of just regular milk. Cheese is okay. So, it is not like the doctor totally puts a damper on ones eating style. He just teaches one to eat more correctly. Some of his vegetarian recipes are quite good. Sometimes, I still eat junk food sweets but not as much and I am trying to cut them out completely because I really feel they serve no purpose at all. I noticed that lowering my carbs reduced my cravings for sweets. I guess he was a great doctor and a very helpful, good soul.

| done for myself. I (female) started in Jan 2003 at age 32, 511, 254 lbs with a laundry list of ailments (Acid reflux, painful heels andamp. back, headaches, high blood pressure and was pre-diabetic). In my first 6 months all of my aches and pains disappeared and in my first year I lost 71 lbs. Right now Ive lost a total of 104 lbs and have NEVER felt better. Im 16 lbs under my goal weight and maintaining this lifestyle is second nature now. I get all of my carbs from healthy vegetables, fruits, and nuts.
Dr. Atkins literally saved my life and I just wish he was around to thank in person.
I owe everything to the good Dr. A. | | |
| No one mentions that Dr. Atkins had a history of heart problems and was very overweight when he died. His diet is a classic but its very easy for people to abuse by staying on it for an extended length of time. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine does not recommend this diet. I think the South Beach diet, written by a cardiologist, is much safer.

Review of Book Atkins New Diet Revolution | | Someday I hope to write a more complete review not so off the cuff. I started Atkins the end of March 2004. Excercise alone wasnt cutting it for me. Id been working out for over a month and had lost hardly anything. Atkins was popular at the time, and thought Id give it a try. I have never eaten so many vegetables in my life, and actually like them now.
To the reviewer who said Atkins had heart problems, thats a bold face lie propagated by the PCRM, a vegan animal rights group affiliated with PETA. They dont like ANY diet that allows meat. Simple as that. They are as biased as a group can get.
The truth is that Atkins had a heart infection caused by a virus he picked up on an oveseas trip. As for his being overweight at the time of his death, heres what *really* happened - he slipped on the sidewalk, hit his head, and the hospital pumped him full of steroids to try to reduce the swelling. Steroids cause MASSIVE water retention. So he was overweight, but it was all water. So to that reviewer. get your facts straight before you post.
Ok, what Atkins did for me. 1) My adult acne cleared up. I now have clear skin. 2) Ive lost 55 pounds (so far - still have a ways to go). 3) My cholesterol is 166. 4) My bad cholesterol went down 14 points, and my good cholesterol went up 29 points. .) 5) My heart attack risk went from a good 3.4 down to an EXCELLENT 2.2. (Anything under 3.5 is considered low risk, the lower the better.) 6) Ive gone from a size 18 to a size 10. 7) My body fat went from 37.8pct. to 26pct.. Thats a reduction in body fat of 11.8pct.. 8) My blood pressure went from high normal to low normal. Its currently about 100/62. 9) My triglicerides (a measure of how much fat is in your blood) are a rock bottom 39 (they need to be under 150, the lower the better). 10) I was so addicted to sugar that fruit didnt taste sweet. Now it is sweet. Ive been eating tons of summer berries (YUM.), and I cant remember the last time I had a Snickers bar. I dont even miss them.
I cannot thank Dr. Atkins enough for turning my life around, changing my eating habits, and getting my horrible medication-induced carb cravings under control. I love this way of eating, and with my blood tests coming back so great, Im sticking with it.
Thanks, Dr. A. | | |
Review of Book Atkins New Diet Revolution | | I read Atkins and right then, it made me go back in time to my young years in my country, as well as to the life style of the gauchos (cowboys)... Because these people basic diet consist in lots of proteins (cow meat, lamb, pig, chicken, eggs and fish from fresh water) and of course healthy carbs (vegetables and fruits usually from their own farms). They, in general, live long lasting lives... they do not use chemicals and do not know what junk food is... they hardly ever visit a hospital (I can say that as a fact because my mom was a nurse in the main hospital) and from what I heard from her, they would go to a hospital usually because of accidents at work... not because of lack in health caused by their diets... In addition to that, because of their hard work, they are usually thin (they dont even need to exercise).
I, myself, followed this diet (bad to say not for so long because I wasnt very persistant) and besides the awful headaches I had the first two or three days during the change in habits, I have to recognize that the diet was great, I lost about 8 lbs in two weeks... Amazing...
And I cant beleive how, some people in these reviews who claim are doctors can tell that the diet says you have to eat fats... as if was something totally free.... I think we are smart people, and what Atkins message express is. GO BACK TO NATURAL HEALTHY HABITS... He also talks about exercising... And of course, he doesnt say fill yourself with fats... I think that, who maintain that point of view are misleading people from the real message.
And as a last word, somebody else in these reviews said, keeping a healthy diet and exercising will keep you fit, this is another fad diet... Please, you can give that message to somebody who never gain 100 extra pounds... Because like you said it will keep you fit, but it wont make you lose weight... You have to be overweight to understand what that person goes through...

Review of Book Atkins New Diet Revolution | | Reviewer. A reader Dozens of diets, fads and gimmicks abound, but how many have the success rate or the longevity of Atkins Answer. Only Atkins. Atkins has been around now for over 30 years and for 1 reason it works. People are worried about the fat in the Atkins program but go around eating potato chips, frendh fries and ice cream Cmon. I lost 48 lbs initially with Atkins a few years ago and have maintained it. While losing weight, I gained muscle, filled out my figure, lost in major fat areas. waist, hips and thighs. While on the program, I didnt feel like I was on a diet. I felt like I was having a feast each and every day. My skin tone also improved. Energy soared. I went from a couch potato to starting a mild exercise program of walking now Im pumping iron too and doing more advanced exercises, cardio and spot training. I know people will say its the exercise. And that would be only partly true. I lost 48 lbs without any exercise at all, just Atkins. The exercise part came because I wanted to firm up and improve my condition and health. I highly recommend the Atkins diet. It is simply the best and most successful fat loss program of all time. Dr Atkins, RIP.

Review of Book Atkins New Diet Revolution | | Reviewer. A reader This is an update from a Sept. 99 review, and a Jan 2000 review. When I started my diet in July of 1999, I was 270 lbs and 6 tall. I have lost 87 lbs and have passed my goal weight of 185. Have held below 185 for over two months. My menu is basically eggs, bacon and sausage for breakfast. a chicken (most often double chicken) salad for lunch. and steak, vegetables and salad for dinner. I snack on the Atkins bars and on Macadamia nuts. I have added a little fruit to the diet after hitting my goal. My cholesterol is 147. I am extremely strict. I have eaten no bread, pasta, sugar etc. for the entire period, and I have absolutely no desire to eat such food again. My only real deviation has been the continued consumption of caffeine in coffee and diet drinks and an occasional (every other month) glass of wine. For my body type, this diet worked great. During the past year, I have read the book several times, and it helps to reinforce what foods to eat. The key is just doing it every day. My Doctor, who had prescribed a no fat diet for me for the last 12 years, gave me a check up recently and told me that for middle aged men with large bellies, this diet seems to work the best. My problem is why didnt he tell me about this diet himself 12 years ago if that is what he truly thought. Luckily, I found the Atkins book on my own. Good luck. P.S. For those who hate this diet, I dont care if I lost 87 lbs of water. lugging that much water around was a real pain.

Review of Book Atkins New Diet Revolution | | Twenty years after publication of his bestselling Diet Revolution , Dr. Atkins is back and ready to raise a new ruckus. Once again, he contends that weight gain has little to do with fat intake. indeed, he will demonstrate how much fat you can burn off, while eating liberally, even luxuriously.79 He encourages dieters to revel in traditional sources of protein like red meat, and to eat eggs and bacon for breakfast82-3 . Rapid weight loss, he promises, will be achieved through his 14-day induction diet, in which almost all carbohydrates are virtually banned from the table, forcing the body to go into a fat-burning metabolic state called ketosis. He still urges broad-based vitamin supplements to take up any nutritional slack. So whats changed in 20 years Atkins says he now is more interested in complete wellness than in dropping pounds quickly. he stresses that the induction is not to be considered a lifetime regimen unless, of course, the dieter has particularly stubborn metabolic resistance. Readers of his last book may notice some defensiveness--two decades of criticism clearly have taken their toll. Nonetheless, there is enough of the old Atkins to make this the most arrogant diet book to appear in a long while. sic, ital I hope to amaze you , he writes, as I amazed millions of dieters in the past . From Library Journal Atkins updates his 20-year-old best seller, Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution ( LJ 9/15/72), with a holistic approach to health and well-being. He repeats his controversial, questionably valid premise that the elimination of carbohydrates from the diet will result in weight loss, good health, and euphoria. Contrary to current thinking, Atkins promotes a diet of protein and fat in four stages. induction, ongoing weight loss, premaintenance, and maintenance. Case histories document his achievements. However, his verbose text, bloated by rhetoric and generalizations, may overwhelm lay readers, who may not be able to distinguish between fact and speculation. Useful appendixes include menus, recipes, and a carbohydrate gram counter. For libraries where Atkinss earlier works were popular. - Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y. From Kirkus Reviews Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution, published two decades ago, sold millions of copies but was denounced by medical authorities for its unsound high-calorie, low-carbohydrate regimen. Now its back, slightly modified, and billed even more contrariwise as a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. Atkins blames carbohydrates for most cases of overweight--as well as for much fatigue, mental fog, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A high-fat diet, he says, is harmful only when added to a high- carbohydrate diet. At times, he backs off and hedges, admitting, for example, that refined flour and sugar, not all carbohydrates, are the culprits, and even that the desserts he promotes should be limited to special occasions. Still, heavy cream, butter, and cheese abound in his recipes. bacon and eggs are on his daily breakfast menu. and his program, especially the 14-day induction diet designed to induce ketosis, or fat-burning, turns all prevailing guidelines upside down. It will be interesting to see how this book does now that low-fat, high-carbohydrate eating has been so widely accepted by professionals and public alike. Atkins claims success with his 25,000 overweight patients (who take an average of 30 nutritional pills a day along with the diet), and he scores a point or two against pro-establishment preconceptions among researchers, but he certainly doesnt prove that his is the healthier diet. Still, get ready for a blitz. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
