Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

Since it is an Atkins book, it would have been wise to show fiber carbs, since this would have allowed the reader to subtract this to arrive at net carbs. It doesnt. Really unbelievable.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

The Atkins diet is a regime that works for many or most people. For me, I have gotten back to the weight I was in high school by following the Atkins program. I am a true believer.

As followers of Atkins know, the one thing you have to be pretty conscientious about is counting how many grams of carbohydrate are in your diet. While this book is helpful for that, it is far from complete. For example, I like to drink wine. This book only lists a view varieties of alcoholic beverages as regards their carbohydrate gram count. What I was hoping for when I bought this book was something that might have contained say, 3 or 4 dozen varieties of white wine and their gram counts. But no. Same with salad dressings--it would be great to have listings by brand, with dozens of brands. Once again, this book only contains several brands.

This book is somewhat better than the gram count section contained at the back of Dr. Atkins book, (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution) but not a lot better. While this book may be the best available, someone out there would do well to publish a much more comprehensive guide. Adherents of the Atkins program would probably snap it up.

The Atkins diet program is a program that works as Dr. Atkins describes it in his book. A comprehensive guide to carbohydrate counts in brand-name foods would be helpful, but this guide falls short.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

Though I have not yet read this book Im on my way out to get it. A woman I met through work found out about Dr. Atkins from her father. He has lost 70lbs so far. The woman has lost 29.5lbs in a month. Dangerous I thought maybe but she has a lot more to go and says the weight loss is starting to slow down to a more even pace. I was very excited when I heard about this new way of life and eating. Ive read other comments and cant wait to see how my results will be. Wish me luck and I do the same for every one else.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

This book (more a pamphlet) is very portable, but it doesnt provide in-depth carbohydrate, fat, and protein counting. Most of the information I read is right off product labels. For example, I can read the egg carton to know the numbers for eggs, but what about calculating grams for yokes and whites separately

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

It seems cutting fat and calories isnt working for everyone. The Atkins philosophy includes a deeper awareness of where the carbs are hiding out. Once you find out what you should be eating, it all seems easier.

After purchasing the videos describing the diet, I found the small booklet they provided with the videos to not quite be as extensive as I desired. Soon, I looked up other items for the diet and found this tiny book.

This has Both carbs and net carbs. Apparently counting the carbs is not enough. Now there are certain carbs that have a minimal impact on blood sugar and the net carbs are the only ones you have to worry about. So when you are buying Frosted Mini Wheats, 1/2 cup has 22.7 grams of carb. The NET is 19.8 grams. Id avoid them altogether and go with Cheerios which are only 7.6 grams net carbs. So, this can help you pick the best cereals.

Also, when thinking fruit. 1 cup orange sections are 8.4 g net carbs, but 4 fl oz orange juice is 13.2 net carbs. And who drinks just 4 fl oz. We are talking 8 or more. So, the choice to eat an orange instead of drink orange juice can have a significant effect on the amount of carbs you are consuming. Now I skip the frozen orange juice and head for the produce department. Plus, Im getting more fiber.

It is going to take me a while to memorize the gram counts on all my favorite foods, but overall, Im using this book to make the best choices when purchasing food. So, that way I am ahead of the game.

Also, this book explains how the 0 g of carbohydrate label might mean there is as much as 0.99 g carbohydrates per serving.

The Contents.

Introduction - Explains the difference between the low-carb and the low-fat diets.

Four Phases of the Atkins Nutritional Approach - You might be able to start at 20 grams and then you can work up to 90 or 120 grams a day. I was eating over 200 grams carbs a day which is too high for me, for sure.

If eating just a hamburger patty doesnt sound appealing to you, try adding gravy that is low in carbs and eat it with a side of vegetables instead of the hamburger bun. Better yet, go for the steak or a marinated piece of chicken.

Having a highligher handy while looking through this book is helpful. That way you can highlight the lowest carb choices and try to stick with those foods. Soon you will be choosing green tea with stevia instead of that lemon-lime soda that has a whopping 38.3 grams net carbs. Yikes. Diet drinks are of course the way to go if you dont mind the taste of the sweetners, which are getting better over the years.

Sure, you can cheat now and then. Why not Life is too short to always
be on a diet.

What this diet does is help you make better choices. My weight has been increasing for years and I had no idea what to do about it. The less I ate, the more I seemed to gain. Finally, I had enough.

With this diet awareness or carb-counting idea I have stabilized my weight and am now seeing it go down. I also noticed my skin changing and becoming clearer and smoother.

This book is small enough to keep in your purse or in a pocket. Dont leave home without it. .)

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

I read this book from cover to cover and I often review it. I have lost over 50 pounds and have managed to keep the weight off for over a year. Anyone who says this book isnOt informative enough either (1) hasnOt read it thouroughly (2) doesnOt have good comprehension skills (3) didnOt like what they read because they were finally told the truth about their obesity and they donOt want to give up donuts and spaghetti. This diet isnOt for the weak. You must give up bread, pasta, sugar, starchy veggies and yes, you must give up donuts. But the results are phenominal. The sacrifices seem harsh in the beginning, but if you stick with it, soon your food cravings for flour and sugar disappear along with a large percentage of your out of control appetite. This diet is the only diet that worked for me. I really believe Dr. Atkins is a saint.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

This is Atkins pocketsized Carbohydrate Gram Counter updated and expanded.

For each food item listed carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, fat and calories are included. A nice difference between this and the older version of the book is the inclusion of net carbs.
The net carb of a food is the impact it will make on your body. These are the only carbs you need to count because they exclude carbohydrates and sugar alcohols.

The mini book begins with an introduction that explains the science behind why its carbohydrates we need to be concerned with not fat. Then the book gives a very basic overview of the Atkins plan. One page also gives portion size guidelines. Really handy. For example 2T peanut butter is about the size of 2 teabags.

The rest of the book is devoted to food and beverage counts. Though the book is not as comprehensive as a larger book such as Corrine Netzgers Book of Food Counts it covers quite a few foods.

If you are only purchasing one guide, I would purchase a larger one as it is more comprehensive. But its really helpful to have this little book in your purse, pocket or car for quick checks of what you are eating.

The small size makes it easy to tote. The back of the book gives tips for dining out and has a small list of popular restaurants and the counts for their food items.

I liked the book so well, I purchased two. One for my purse and the other for quick checks on the kitchen counter.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

I have been on this diet since March 19 and have lost 17 pounds. The diet is easy to follow and I get plenty to eat, never getting hungry between meals. After the 14 day induction diet, I began adding more vegetables and fruits, as the book suggests, and continue to lose a pound per week. The secret is to be creative with your menus. I feel great. My friends say I look great and years younger. My husband andamp. sons have changed their eating habits as well. All this gives me the incentive to continue. The diet truly alters your eating lifestyle and the entire family is healthier.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

It is astonishing to read the slam pieces here about Dr. Atkins so-called obesity and overweight condition at the time of his death. Here are the facts.
* He previously had a heart condition called cardiomyopathy -- a serious disease of the heart muscle which is unrelated to diet.
* He died of a head injury because of an accident falling on slippery ice and not of being overweight.
* His actual weight was 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital at the time of his accident. The erroneous reports of him weight 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death. The extra weight was not fat, but an accumulation of body fluids linked to organ failure during his coma.
* His previous reported heart attack was due to a viral infection and not diet related. He spoke openly of his condition on various national news programs.
* The report that was released about him being overweight was leaked to the press by a group named Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which is an ardent opponent of the Atkins diet. In short, they distorted his weight by reporting the weight at the time of death - 258 lbs, and not at the time of his admittance - 200 lbs...an obvious attempt to discredit and distort the facts surrounding Dr. Atkins death.
* A formal complaint has been filed by the Medical Examiner of New York regarding the suspicious leak of this information to the public by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
* The disinformation surrounding Dr.Atkins untimely death is politically driven by the AMA and other detractors of the diet.

Dr. Atkins book, New Diet Revolution has turned the AMA and other nutritional views upside down and has created a furor over the standard edicts of the medical profession. What is not said among the detractors of the Diet is that it is safe and it works. The information contained in this book will not only help you lose weight, it could save your life. The food industry, especially the bread and pasta industry have lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the low carb revolution. Is it any wonder that this diet is under so much fire Keep an open mind and read the book.

As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the Elixir Diet system (see below). The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasnt even read the Atkins book.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

Dont bother with this book. It isnt wrong or inaccurate, understand, it is simply woefully small. I highly recommend Corrinne Netzers Carb Counter book--almost 500 pages of listings, broken down in almost unbelievable detail. Carb listings for nearly ever imaginable *brand* of a food item. Dr. Atkins book pales in comparison, believe me.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

Ive read all the comments made about this book and would like to offer the following. This booklet is not meant to be used to follow the diet. It is a companion to The New Diet Revolution which is essential reading for anyone on this diet. I have been on it for several weeks now and Im at the maintenance stage. For those of you who are looking up wine in the Carb Counter booklet, it is not listed simply because wine is made with grapes (the highest sugar content fruit) and sugar isnt allowed on this diet.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

This is a handy little book and by the way it certainly does have the carb counts for pasta, a previous commentator missed it. Look under pasta and rice. I wish it did have the number of nuts you can eat instead of ounces. I dont carry a food scale to know what an ounce of nuts is. Otherwise, it is worth it because it has a brief introduction to the diet and the size makes it easy to carry with you. I think Dr. Atkins deserves a medal for standing for what he knows is right. I highly recommend his diet for a way of life.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

One would think that since Atkins counts only digestible carbs that the carbs in this book would be the Atkins carbs, not the total carbs. BUT, this book shows you the total carbs and no accompanying info on fiber so that you can net it out. USELESS. The Eades duo have a counter that I just ordered which is written up as giving you the net carbs that low-carb dieters need. Hopefully that will be the book I need.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

This should only be sold in the supermarket check-out lanes for 99, like other mini-books. You can tell just as much from reading the nutrition labels on the products that you buy. Some of the information doesnt seem to agree with that on the packages themselves. Which should I believe Just using it is a guide I guess, then its useful, but I wouldnt know if Id feel 100pct. confident in its usage for a complete detailed factual information. Its easy to follow and eas to find the item you may be looking for, but there is alot of of staple foods that isnt listed.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

very small - but filled with almost every product you can think of - take it with me everywhere - just wish some things didnt have so many darn carbs. Im still trying to not go over 30 grams per day but it can be difficult.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

Despite complaints that the book is small, I found that it was very helpful to be able to carry the book with me and refer to it whenever needed. A 500-page tome would be a little bothersome when sitting at a table in a restaurant...I would definitely recommend this book as a companion to the New Diet Revolution book, and strongly urge anyone thinking about starting the Induction Diet for the first time to purchase the New Carbohydrate Gram Counter before they start. Why 4 stars instead of 5 A hard cover or spiral bound cover, and laminated pages, would make it easier to carry the book in purse or briefcase and use it in restaurants without worrying about ruining it.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

I purchased two carb counter books and found the other, more extensive book to be difficult to use. This simple, little book contains most ingredients used in recipes. It is a great tool in helping to create good meals while keeping within the limits of the Atkins Diet.

If youve started the Atkins diet, or at least read the diet book, then you already realize the importance of counting the carbohydrate grams you consume. Please allow me to clear up some FAQs.

1. This book will not teach you how to do the Atkins diet - for that, read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.

2. This book will show you total carbohydrate, fat, and protein gram counts for standard portion sizes of general or common foods. For instance, there is a general listing for fig but not Kadota fig or Mission. If you are into more exotic fare than the standard American foods listed - say for instance that you like obscure asian fruits like or youre a oeniphile who is interested in the carb count of 60 different varieties of French wine- then you will have to do research for the carbs in your special interest on your own.

3. This book will not make specific recommendations as to which ones to avoid, eat more of, etc. - thats not its job. Instead, you are allowed to make those decisions for yourself based on the information presented and your individual allowance of daily carbs.

4. This book does not list calories because the Atkins diet is qualitative, not quantitative.

5. This book will, however, be a quick on-the-spot reference guide for Atkins dieters. It is designed to be portable and easy to understand at a glance when you need information in a hurry.

Are there any flaws Yes. For one thing, IMHO, the could come down a bit considering that this book is a very small, almost the size of those supermarket pocket books at the checkout counter that cost only 99 cents or so. Also, it would have been helpful if Dr. Atkins had included the fiber content along with the fats, carbs and protein so that one could calculate total impact carb grams and make more educated decisions. Still, I believe this is the best carb gram counter out there for low-carb dieting purposes. I find myself consulting it quite often.

Review of Book Atkins New Carbohydrate

I started the Atkins diet on my own, based on the guiding principles described on the book Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. I have steadily and comfortably reduced inches off my waist by using the Dr. Atkins New Carbohydrate Gram Counter as a guide to food selection. If it were not for its reduced, concise listing of foods (carbs, proteins, fat) I could not have understood the method I was supposed to follow to achieve weight loss. It is not a comprehensive guide, so dont even think of it as the ultimate compilation of your diet choices. Yet, its tiny size made it perfect to carry it in a handbag, in a glove compartment, every time I need help to navigate through the supermarket maze in search for low-carb foods, and yes, to elegantly cover my tracks when I cheated the diet.

Dr. Atkins New Carbohydrate Gram Counter has a slightly misleading name. While grams of carbohydrate are listed for various foods, there are also protein and fat grams listed for each entry. With more than 1,200 listings, including hundreds of brand-name products, this makes a handy, portable reference. It should be noted, however, that that the Gram Counter is really meant as a companion to Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. the brief dietary information included in the introduction to the Gram Counter isnt of much use by itself.

From Publishers Weekly
This small-format companion book to Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution offers people a pocketsize guide to any of the four phases of the Atkins plan. Organized into food categories such as Poultry and Beverages, the book gives the amount of carbs, net carbs, fiber, protein, fat and calorie counts for each item. Both generic and brand name foods are included. For example, there are nine listings for different types of roasted chicken and there are even more listings for frozen, skillet and potpies, including Banquet, Morton and Purdue. The dessert section has been expanded from earlier editions to include a range of ice cream and sorbet products, cakes and cookies, as well as snacks such as chips and peanuts. Newer products such as terra chips and soy crisps are included. Sufficient explanatory material is found in the dining out chapters, which cover both restaurants and fast food chains. Atkins also offers pointers such as Dont torture yourself if you accidentally consume something thats been batter dipped or breaded. Remember its only one meal.
